Hess was a co-captain on the volleyball team and made an immediate impact on the program, earning her way onto the AMC All-Freshman Team in 2005 as well as picking up team 'Rookie of the Year' honors. She was an honorable mention All-AMC pick as a sophomore before earning second team accolades as a junior in 2007.

She was also extremely consistent in all that she did. Each fall from 2005 through 2008, she was named the Ursuline 'Offensive Player of the Year' in addition to obtaining AMC Scholar-Athlete status after earning President's or Dean's List honors every semester.

The former 'Champion of Character' recipient was a significant contributor during the program's winningest season in program history in 2007.

Off the court, Hess was repeatedly recognized for her work in the community. In 2009, all of her hard work culminated in her receiving the Gonzaga Medal, the highest honor presented to one graduating senior.

She served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Cleveland chapter of the American Red Cross and earned a scholarship as a result of her involvement with the Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program. Hess was included in the inaugural UC Wall of Fame in 2008, the same year she won the St. Catherine Medal, awarded to just two junior students. Additionally, she secured the inaugural Brand Illumination Award in 2008 and was a Fleur-de-Lis Leadership Honorary. She was a member of Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society, and recognized in 'Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.'
