A beloved member of the Ursuline College community for over 21 years, Dr. Virginia "Ginny" Marion (’66 – SJ) passed away in the fall of 2010, prior to her induction in the spring of 2011, after a heroic battle with cancer. Dr. Marion, a popular and devoted teacher, mentor and colleague worked to empower and educate the education students at Ursuline College.
From the initiation of athletic competition at Ursuline in 2000, Dr. Marion supported the Ursuline Athletic Department, as well as the athletes who participated in various sports. Despite driving rain, frigid temperatures, mounds of snow, and blowing winds – Dr. Marion attended games and matches to support every single athlete who competed in an Arrows uniform.
She attended every single home soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball game and also made an effort to attend as many bowling, cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and track events as well. Spectators could always find her on the corner of the bleachers, with Dr. Mary Jo Cherry, wearing her Ursuline Athletic gear, and cheering every play!
Dr. Marion was a professor in the Education Department, where she also served as Director of Middle Childhood Education, AYA, Multi-Age Visual Arts and Student Teaching.
According to her colleague, Dr. Mary Jo Cherry: “Ginny loved going to athletic events at the College. In fact, Ginny and I claimed seats in the upper row of what we learned was the visiting team’s section of the bleachers from the first volleyball game played at Ursuline, and we seldom left that section because, as we so often remind the coaches and athletes, ‘these are our unofficially reserved seats.”
