PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Ursuline College softball team dropped both games of Saturday's (April 18) doubleheader to Salem International University. Game one went to the visitors by a score of 9-5 and then the Tigers blanked the Arrows, 5-0, in the second game.

With the losses, the Arrows are now 7-22 overall and 0-17 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Salem International has won four straight and sits at 11-24 overall and 5-12 in conference play.

The three-game sweep, which began with SIU's 4-3 victory on Friday (April 17), eliminated the Arrows from the conference's postseason tournament.

UC's offense struggled to get going against SIU pitchers Kayla Lynch (game one winner, now 3-12) and Katie Holestin (game two winner, now 8-14). Juniors Danielle Almodiel and Alison Porter both had two hits in the doubleheader, as did freshman Brigitte Snow who collected a hit in each game to extend her hitting streak to six.

Almodiel also scored a pair of runs in the twin-bill.

In game one, Salem's Katie Chryssofos drove in seven runs. She worked a bases loaded walk in the third, and the next time she came to bat in the fourth inning, the bases were also packed. This time around, Chryssofos belted a grand slam off UC freshman pitcher Gina Rosshirt but the rookie hurler should've been out of the inning already had the UC defense not failed her.

Chryssofos also smacked a two-run dinger in the sixth.

In the second game, SIU scored one in first and one in the fourth so UC was in it until the Tigers added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Officially, Rosshirt (1-14) had a 1.20 ERA on Saturday as she allowed just two earned runs in 11 and two-thirds innings. She had eight strikeouts and seven walks.

The other three runs were surrendered by junior pitcher Rachel Jalowiec.

The Arrows will take a quick break from conference play on Tuesday (April 21) when they host neighborhood rival John Carroll University for two games starting at 3:30 p.m. Max Radigan will call both contests on the Ursuline College Sports Network.
