PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Ursuline College softball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but couldn't hang on as the visitors from Salem International University came from behind to win Friday's (April 17) game, 4-3.

With the loss, the Arrows are now 7-20 overall and 0-15 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Salem International jumped to 9-24 overall and 3-12 in conference play.

Junior third baseman Alison Porter came through with a one-out single in the bottom of the first and sophomore Kaitlin Krajcik was giving herself up for a sacrifice bunt. The Salem International third baseman made a poor throw and Krajcik was safe and Porter scooted all the way to third.

After Krajcik stole second to put two in scoring position, sophomore Brigitte Snow singled back up the middle to score both runners.

The Arrows added another run in the home half of the second. After SIU pitcher Katie Holestin retired the first two hitters, sophomore Ashlie Brown reached on another throwing error by the third baseman. When the ball went all the way to the fence, Brown advanced to second. Senior Sam Roberts attempted to bunt for a hit and Holestin misplayed it which put runners at the corners with two down.

UC head coach Sue Woodford got creative and gave Roberts the steal sign. SIU decided to throw through and when they did, Brown scampered home for the game's third run.

The three-run lead didn't last long. UC freshman pitcher Gina Rosshirt K'd Shannon Lynch to start the top of the third and after Holestin singled, Rosshirt struck out Jane Judware for the second out of the inning. Rosshirt got the next hitter to hit a lazy fly ball and the UC center fielder was fighting the sun and didn't see it until the last moment. The ball hit off her glove and fell to the ground to extend the inning.

After a Tori Butler walk loaded the bases, a single and double followed to clear the bags and tie the game at three.

Salem International scored what proved to be the game-winner in the top of the sixth. Butler was hit by a pitch to start the frame and the next two hitters grounded out to the shortstop but Butler moved up a station each time.

A two-out single to left by Cass Alexy plated Butler and the Tigers manufactured the run with just one hit in the inning.

Holestin retired the Arrows in order in the sixth and put two on in the seventh with the winning run at first base but she got out of the jam to improve to 7-12 on the year. UC mustered just four hits off Holestin and she walked just one batter in her seven innings of work. Two of the runs scored on her watch were unearned.

Rosshirt (1-12) went the distance and allowed just one earned run. She scattered five hits, issued three walks and struck out a season-high seven.

These two teams will get together for two more games on Saturday (April 18) with game one of the doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Max Radigan will call all the action on the Ursuline College Sports Network.
