Game One vs. Trevecca Nazarene Box Score / Game Two vs. Urbana Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ursuline dropped its first two games of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships and the Arrows were eliminated on Thursday (May 2). UC lost to regular season champion Trevecca Nazarene University 4-0 in an opening round game and then fell to Urbana University 8-3 in the day’s only elimination game.
Ursuline finished the 2013 season with a 9-23 record.
In the first game of the day,
the regular season champions cruised to a 4-0 victory thanks to a no-hit effort from sophomore pitcher Kelsey Kemp (11-2). She walked just one batter in her seving innings of work.
Ursuline shook it off and demonstrated tremendous resiliency in the second game and built an early lead. Senior Ciara Seymour scored in the second to give UC a 1-0 lead and then Urbana answered with a run in the top of the third to knot the game at 1-1. The Arrows built a 3-1 lead in the fifth when they capitalized on some Blue Knight miscues.
Junior Natalie Huggins singled with one out and then advanced to third when freshman Rachel Wells – named the conference’s Freshman of the Year earlier in the day – put a ball in play that was thrown away by the second baseman.
After a strikeout, Seymour hit a grounder to the second baseman and Urbana should have been out of the inning but an error allowed both Huggins and Wells to score, making it a 3-1 game in favor of the Arrows.
Urbana, just as it did when Ursuline scored the first run of the game, bounced back in a big way. The Blue Knights pushed seven runs across in the top of the sixth thanks to five hits and an Ursuline error.
Urbana pitcher Lauren Anderson allowed a hit in both the six and seventh inning but the Arrows never really threatened. The junior pitcher allowed three runs – only one of which was earned – while striking out four and not walking a batter.
UC freshman Rachel Jalowiec made her first career start and allowed four runs in three innings of work before giving way to Seymour. She allowed one run before junior Sarah Maxwell was tagged with the last three to take the loss.
Wells and sophomore Nicole Schierbaum each had two hits on Thursday, an indication that the feature is bright for head coach Sue Woodford’s team.
