CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Ursuline led Cedarville early in both games but the host Lady Jackets demonstrated tremendous resiliency and won both games of Saturday’s (April 20) doubleheader.

Cedarville captured game one 9-1 in five innings before taking game two, 12-5.

Ursuline is now 9-19 overall and 0-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Cedarville improved to 21-18 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

UC senior catcher Megan Passwaiter was the only Arrow to notch more than one hit on Saturday and the defense hindered the pitching efforts. Ursuline allowed six unearned runs while just one of the six runs scored by the Arrows was unearned.

Game One: Cedarville 9, Ursuline 1 (Five Innings)
Ursuline took an early 1-0 lead but couldn’t hang on as host Cedarville scored nine unanswered runs to take game one, 9-1 in five innings.

Senior catcher Megan Passwaiter singled in the first inning and then moved to third when a Cedarville infielder committed a throwing error while trying to throw out junior first baseman Natalie Huggins.

Freshman left fielder Rachel Wells grounded out to the second baseman but by virtue of putting the ball in play, Passwaiter was able to come home and give Ursuline a 1-0 lead before Cedarville came to bat.

The home team responded in a big way, racking up five runs in the second and three more in the third. The Lady Jackets prematurely ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when second baseman Tanya Busby’s two-out single plated third baseman Shannon Muldowney – who earlier hit a two-run homer – to decide the final outcome.

UC senior pitcher Ciara Seymour (4-9) took the loss after allowing nine runs, only three of which were earned. She recorded one strikeout and didn’t walk a batter but did allow 15 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Cecelia DeBartolo (6-8) worked all five innings in the circle for the Lady Jackets to earn the victory. The run she allowed wasn’t earned and the Arrows managed just three hits. DeBartolo recorded six strikeouts and didn’t walk a single batter.

Game Two: Cedarville 12, Ursuline 5
The Arrows jumped on the Lady Jackets early thanks to a five-run second inning.

Sophomore right fielder Nicole Schierbaum worked a one-out walk before freshman Jayla Garner singled through the left side to move her up a station. Both runners then moved into scoring position when Cedarville pitcher Jennifer Spann threw an errant pitch. Senior DP Sam Gauvin was able to put a ball in play and it was thrown away by the shortstop, allowing Schierbaum to score the first run of the game while Garner also scored on the error.

Senior second baseman Laura Grana followed with a single to the shortstop who committed another throwing error that permitted Gauvin to come around and score, making it a 3-0 game.

After a groundout, senior catcher Megan Passwaiter walked and then followed Grana home when junior first baseman Natalie Huggins doubled to left center.

Cedarville chipped into the lead with a single run in the third. Right fielder and leadoff hitter Rachel Bull singled, stole second then then scored on a throwing error to make it a 5-1 game.

The Lady Jackets took the lead for good with a seven-run fourth inning. Cedarville batted around and seven hits led to the seven runs.

Third baseman Shannon Muldowney homered in the fifth to extend the lead to four at 9-5 and then the home team pushed three more insurance runs across home plate in the bottom of the sixth.

UC junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell worked the first 4 1/3 innings in the circle and was charged with nine earned runs while falling to 4-9. Freshman Rachel Jalowiec got the last five outs while surrendering three Lady Jacket runs.

Courtnie Spain relived Spann in the top of the third and worked the final five innings to earn her eighth victory. She allowed one hit and walked a batter but retired the other 15 hitters she faced.
