Game One Box / Game Two Box
OBERLIN, Ohio – The Ursuline bats came alive in a big way on Thursday (April 18) as the Arrows took both games of a doubleheader at Oberlin College. UC won the first game 4-3 in nine innings before clobbering the host Yeowomen 14-0 in a game that was called after just six innings.
Ursuline improved to 9-17 overall while Oberlin, losers of five straight, is now 4-22.
The 14 runs scored by the Arrows were the most since a 25-0 thrashing of New Rochelle last March.
Five different Arrows had at least three hits on Thursday. Sophomore Nicole Schierbaum led the way with a 5-8 (.625) showing while junior Sarah Maxwell and senior Ciara Seymour were brilliant in the circle.
Game One: Ursuline 4, Oberlin 3 (Nine Innings)
Ursuline took a 2-0 lead in the sixth on sophomore right fielder Nicole Schierbaum’s second home run of the season. The Arrows were within one out of winning the game in regulation when Katie Pieplow knotted the game at 2-2 with a two-out, two-run single to center.
Freshman center fielder Rachel Wells scored a run in the eighth but the Yeowomen answered in the bottom of the frame to force a ninth inning.
In the ninth, senior Sam Gauvin scored the winning run when the Oberlin third baseman misplayed a ball. This came after the Arrows third run was also unearned.
UC senior pitcher Ciara Seymour – who was in command all afternoon – got help from her defense in the ninth when freshman shortstop Jayla Garner came home with an infield grounder to eliminate the would-be tying run.
Seymour then recorded her sixth strikeout of the day for the 27th and final out to cap her fourth victory this season.
Pieplow took the loss for Oberlin. She is now 0-3.
Not to be lost in the game one victory was the fact that freshman left fielder Danielle Almodiel notched her first career base hit.
Game Two: Ursuline 14, Oberlin 0 (Six Innings)
The finale was scoreless through three but then the Arrows hung three runs on the scoreboard in both the fourth and fifth innings before posting eight runs in the top of the sixth.
Ursuline scored 14 runs on 14 hits while five players recorded a multi-hit game, led by three hits from junior first baseman Natalie Huggins and senior DP/catcher Sam Gauvin.
Gauvin also crushed her first career home run, a two-run blast, in the sixth inning to ice the Arrows victory.
The first four hitters in the UC lineup – sophomore second baseman Sam Roberts, senior catcher Megan Passwaiter, Huggins and freshman center fielder Rachel Wells – joined Gauvin in scoring two runs.
Senior third baseman Ciara Seymour, fresh off a fine pitching performance in game one, drove in a team-high four runs in the second game of the day.
All of that offense was more than enough support for junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell (4-8). She scattered three hits and issued just one walk while striking out six in her complete game effort.
Of the 14 runs the Yeowomen allowed, only six were earned as a result of three Oberlin errors.
