A few Arrows had terrific individual performances. Sophomore third baseman Kaitlin Krajcik was 4-5 with two runs scored and she also drove in four. Junior second baseman Alison Porter was 5-8 with three runs scored and sophomore shortstop Brigitte Snow was 4-7 with a run scored.
The Arrows and Fighting Scots will conclude the 2015 season tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:00 p.m. at the UC Softball Field. Max Radigan will call the action on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
Game One: Ursuline 5, Ohio Valley 0 (Box Score)Ursuline jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and that would be more than enough run support for freshman pitcher Gina Rosshirt who cruised while picking up her first collegiate shutout.
Junior second baseman Alison Porter singled up the middle to get things going and then senior Sam Roberts sacrificed her to second. After a pop out to the second baseman for the second out, the Arrows rallied with two down. Sophomore Kaitlin Krajcik laced a single up the middle to bring in Porter.
Sophomore Brigitte Snow followed with a single through the left side to extend her hitting streak to eight games while advancing Krajcik to second. Rosshirt helped her own cause with a run-scoring single to left and then sophomore Brittany Humbel, playing for the first time since March 28th, singled home Snow.
UC tacked on a run in the fifth after Roberts singled to right center, stole second and scored on sophomore Carly Hoffner's single to right. The Arrows added an insurance run in the sixth, again with two outs.
Rosshirt started the frame with a single to right but she was erased on a fielder's choice. After a strikeout left a runner on first with two outs, junior Danielle Almodiel worked a walk and then Porter loaded 'em up when she singled to left field.
Roberts, who was honored between games on Senior Day, took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to bring in UC's fifth run.
Rosshirt was simply terrific in the circle. She retired the first six batters she faced and she retired the last six batters she faced. In between, she was solid too. Her final stat line showed she allowed just three hits, walked one and hit a batter while striking out eight. Rosshirt faced 26 batters, five above the minimum.
Kristine Brown took the loss to fall to 3-15. She allowed 12 hits and walked a pair in her six innings of work. All five runs allowed were earned.
Game Two: Ohio Valley 7, Ursuline 6 (Box Score)This time around, the Fighting Scots got to UC freshman pitcher Gina Rosshirt first.
OVU had three hits and was aided by two Ursuline errors in the top of the first which allowed the guests to jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Arrows ever came to bat.
UC got one back in the home half of the first when sophomore Kaitlin Krajcik singled home junior Alison Porter. The base hit extended Krajcik's consecutive games reached safely streak to 13.
Three more hits in the second helped OVU extend the lead to four at 5-1 but again the Arrows answered as freshman Briana Benge drove in Rosshirt to cut the deficit to three.
Another UC error helped OVU get one back in the top of the third and Rosshirt worked out of a jam that left the bases loaded to limit the damage.
Those pesky Arrows wouldn't go away easily and answered with a run for the third straight inning. Krajcik started the inning with a walk and moved up a station on sophomore Brigitte Snow's hit which extended the shortstop's hitting streak to nine games. With two on, sophomore Brittany Humbel singled up the middle to bring in Krajcik which made it a 6-3 game.
Ohio Valley scored one more in the fifth to make it a four-run game but, you guessed it, the Arrows came back with three in the sixth to get within one.
Humbel started the home half of the sixth with a two-bagger down the right field line and then sophomore Ashlie Brown came in to pinch run. Sophomore Taylor Test came through with her first hit of the season which put runners at the corners.
After a strikeout, Porter singled up the middle to score Brown. Later in the inning, Krajcik came through in the clutch with a two-out, two run single that plated Test and Porter and brought UC within one. Krajcik is now hitting .413 (19-46) in UC's 19 conference games.
The Arrows came to bat in the seventh needing one run to tie but OVU pitcher Kristine Brown retired the side in order to pick up her fourth win of the year. She pitched four innings in relief of starter Madison Wallace and both hurlers allowed three runs.
Rosshirt took the loss to fall to 3-15. She gave up seven hits, walked three and hit a batter while punching out one. Of the seven Fighting Scot runs, just three were earned thanks to four Ursuline errors.
