Game One: Trevecca Nazarene 5, Ursuline 0Trevecca Nazarene jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when UC freshman pitcher Brittany Humbel was the victim of some bad defense.
With one out in the inning, Ansley Brantley reached on an infield error. After a sac bunt, TNU pitcher Lindsey Stephens singled through the left side to plate Brantley. Back-to-back two-out singles from Mackenzie Leding and Alex Richardson brought in Stephens, helping her own cause.
In the home half of the fourth, the Trojans tacked on three more runs. Humbel retired the first two batters in the frame but a two-out walk allowed TNU to extend the inning.
After Jordan Griner worked the base on balls, Brantley reached on a ball that was dropped in left field. Kelsey Kemp singled to left and both Griner and Brantley scored to make it a four-run game. Kemp later scored on a single by Stephens to decide the final margin.
In total, TNU had eight hits while UC collected four. Unfortunately for the Arrows, they made four errors while the Trojans had just one defensive miscue.
Stephens (7-2) earned the win after allowing just three hits in her five innings of work. Kemp relieved her in the circle and faced eight batters to pick up the final six outs.
Humbel (3-9) took the loss despite the fact that none of the five runs were earned. She pitched four innings before sophomore Rachel Jalowiec covered the final two.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 6, Ursuline 1The Senators jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off UC senior pitcher Sarah Maxwell and never looked back in the first elimination game of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.
As was the case in game one, UC's starting hurler was hurt by some poor defense. With one out in the first, D&E's Ashley Dove reached on an error. Maxwell got the next batter and should have been out of the inning but the very next hitter, Danielle Norton, homered to center field.
Chelsie Stover homered to start the top of the second and it remained a 3-0 game until the bottom of the fourth when the Arrows finally pushed a run across.
Sophomore Alison Porter singled through the left side and then senior third baseman Michele Hare sacrificed her to second. Freshman Dagmar Smith put the ball in play and it was misplayed by the first baseman, allowing Porter to race around and touch home.
Davis & Elkins put three more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, these coming off freshman pitcher Brittany Humbel, to put the game out of reach. Dove delivered the big blow with a two-run double down the left field line.
Alanna Jones worked all seven innings in the circle for D&E and was in complete control, allowing four hits while not walking a single batter. She faced just five above the minimum.
Maxwell (3-10) took the loss after allowing three runs, only one of which was earned. Humbel worked four and a third and allowed two runs and sophomore Rachel Jalowiec recorded the final five outs while allowing a run.
