Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 5, Ursuline 3The visitors got to UC freshman starting pitcher Dagmar Smith early and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Kelsey Miller started with a single and Kaci Ovelgoenner worked a one-out walk. Both advanced two bases on Ashley Crooke's double to center and then Ovelgoenner and Crooke both were brought in on Jessica Carmon's double to right center.
Another Kentucky Wesleyan run scored in the second to extend the lead and it remained a 4-0 game until the bottom of the sixth when the UC bats came to life.
Senior Natalie Huggins started the home half of the sixth with a single to center and she moved up a station on a sac bunt by sophomore Danielle Alomodiel. Junior Sam Roberts drilled a double to right center that allowed Huggins to come around and score and Roberts advanced to third on the throw home.
Sophomore Jayla Garner then doubled home Roberts to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. Smith put the ball in play and used her blazing speed to reach safely, all while Garner advanced to third. With runners at the corners, senior Michele Hare laid down a bunt and while she was cut down at first, Garner raced home to bring the Arrows within one.
After the UC threat stalled, KWC tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it a 5-3 game.
Unfortunately for UC, KWC pitcher Josalyn Ress (12-8) went one-two-three in the seventh to preserve the victory. She allowed six hits and didn't walk a single batter in her seven innings of work, all while striking out three.
Smith (3-5) took the loss after allowing four runs in the first two innings. Her classmate Brittany Humbel got the final 15 outs and allowed one run in those five innings.
Game Two: Kentucky Wesleyan 10, Ursuline 0 (Five Innings)Neither team got on the board in the first two innings but Kentucky Wesleyan knocked down the door with a five-run third. UC senior starting pitcher Sarah Maxwell was the victim of some shaky defense in that inning that provided the Panthers with some extra opportunities.
KWC tacked on five more runs in the fourth and the game was called after five innings due to the run-rule.
Maxwell (3-9) allowed 13 hits and 10 runs – only six of which were earned – in her three and two-thirds innings of work. Sophomore Rachel Jalowiec relieved her in the circle and retired four of the five batters she faced.
UC managed five hits off KWC starting pitcher Casey Smith with seniors Michele Hare and Natalie Huggins each recording a base knock in their final home game. Ultimately, Smith was too much and she faced three above the minimum while earning the abbreviated complete game.
