The Yellow Jackets took game one 5-2 before earning a 6-2 victory in game two.The Arrows are now 9-18 overall and 1-11 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Cedarville won its fourth and fifth straight games and improved its record to 25-10 overall and 10-4 in conference play.Ursuline is scheduled to host Ohio Valley University on Tuesday (April 22). That game will be played at a to be determined neutral site. Game One: Cedarville 5, Ursuline 2Cedarville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Nikki Eigsti walked and scored on a two-out double to left field from catcher Breanna Hughes.
UC came right back and tied the game in the home half of the second thanks in large part to three Yellow Jacket errors.
The Yellow Jackets got to freshman pitcher Brittany Humbel for three runs in the top of the fifth but again, the resilient Arrows chipped away with a lone run in the home half of the inning to make it a 4-2 game.
UC's second run came when Humbel hit a two-out single to left and then scored on senior Michele Hare's double to left center.
Cedarville came right back with a run in the top of the sixth and that was more than pitcher Kelsey Chapman needed. CU starting pitcher Courtnie Spain went three innings and allowed a run on one hit and three walks before letting Chapman take over.
She faced 16 batters in four innings and allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 5-2. Humbel was dealt the loss after working six innings in relief of senior starting pitcher Sarah Maxwell. Humbel scattered 11 hits and walked a pair while striking out two. All five runs she surrendered were earned.
Game Two: Cedarville 6, Ursuline 2Cedarville's Nicole Davis hit a solo homer off UC senior pitcher Sarah Maxwell with two outs in the top of the first and the Yellow Jackets never looked back in game two.Davis got things rolling in the top of the fourth when CU pushed three more runs across home plate. She started the frame with a single to the pitcher and Kelsey Chapman followed with another comebacker that richocheted off Maxwell. Carlyn Hanzel then delivered the third consecutive infield single of the inning to load the bases with nobody out.Another infield single brought home the second run of the game and two more runs went on the board that inning.UC showed signs of life with a two-run fourth to cut the deficit in half. Freshman Brittany Humbel doubled to right center and then senior Michele Hare walked. Sophomore Alison Porter laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position with one out and then freshmen Samantha Herrmann and Kaitlin Krajcik both put the ball in play and made good things happen to bring home UC's only two runs of the afternoon.Cedarville answered UC's two-run fourth with two runs in the top of the fifth to decide the final margin.Cecelia DeBartolo worked all seven innings for the Yellow Jackets and allowed just two hits. She did struggle with her control and walked five batters but she also managed five strikeouts while improving to 11-3.Maxwell allowed six runs on 12 hits in her seven innings. She had six strikeouts and walked just one batter.
