Va. – The Ursuline College softball team went on the road and split with Davis & Elkins College on Saturday (April 12) afternoon. UC took game one 6-0 to earn its first ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory before dropping the finale, 7-0.
The Arrows snapped their seven-game losing streak and finished the day at 9-14 overall and 1-7 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Davis & Elkins is now 10-23 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
UC will stay in West Virginia for two games on Sunday (April 13) at Alderson Broaddus University. Game one will start at 1:00 p.m.
Game One: Ursuline 6, Davis & Elkins 0UC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Michele Hare started the inning by drawing a walk and moving up station to station before eventually scoring on an error by the left fielder.
That was the only run of the game until UC knocked down the door with four runs in the top of the fourth.
Freshman Brittany Humbel started that frame with a single to left center and she moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Hare. Freshman Samantha Herrmm walked before her classmate Kaitlin Krajcik singled to left to load the bases.
With one down, sophomore Jayla Garner put the ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice that plated Humbel. Junior Sam Roberts then delivered the big blow with a two-out double to right that brought in Krajcik and Garner.
Roberts later scored on a single from rookie Dagmar Smith.
The Arrows tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Krajcik was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before coming home when Roberts singled up the middle.
UC's offense provided more than enough support for senior pitcher Sarah Maxwell. She pitched all seven innings and scattered just five hits while issuing two walks. Maxwell punched out seven batters on her own to earn the win and improve to 3-4.
D&E's senior pitcher Alanna Jones (6-9) was charged with five earned runs in her seven innings of work. She allowed eight hits and four walks.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 7, Ursuline 0In game two, the Senators got to freshmen pitchers Brittany Humbel and Dagmar Smith for seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back.
D&E starting pitcher Amber LaBille (4-12) went the distance and allowed just six base runners (five hits, one walk) while striking out five.
