OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Ursuline College softball team dropped its first two games of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Friday (March 21) afternoon at Kentucky Wesleyan College. The host Panthers took game one 5-2 before completing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game number two.

UC slipped to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in the G-MAC while KWC evened its record at 11-11.

The Arrows will head to Nashville to take on Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday (March 22). That doubleheader will start at 3:00 p.m. Eastern (2:00 p.m. Central) and will be covered with free live video and free live stats.

Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 5, Ursuline 2

Kentucky Wesleyan scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead and tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth to build a five-run cushion off senior starting pitcher Sarah Maxwell.

The Arrows wouldn't go away easily and fought for two runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, freshman Brittany Humbel singled and she moved up a base on a wild pitch. Senior Natalie Huggins grounded out on the right side of the infield which allowed Humbel to move to third and she eventually scored on senior Michele Hare's two out base knock.

Freshman Samantha Herrmann tripled to bring in Hare and make it a three-run game but a strikeout ended the threat.

Maxwell was dealt the loss after allowing five runs in six innings. She had three strikeouts and walked a pair. KWC's Josalyn Ross went the distance and scattered two hits while allowing just the two runs in the last inning. She had seven strikeouts and issued just one free pass.

Game Two: Kentucky Wesleyan 6, Ursuline 1
This time, Ursuline struck first when junior Sam Roberts led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single from sophomore Jayla Garner to stake freshman Brittany Humbel to an early lead. The Panthers countered with a run of their own in the home half of the inning when Kaci Ovelgoenner worked a two-out walk and moved around the bases on back-to-back singles.

Kelsey Miller was hit by a pitch to start the Panther third and she came around to score to give KWC a lead it would never relinquish. The home team knocked down the door in the fifth with four runs on four hits and an error to make it a 6-1 game and neither team pushed anyone across in the final two innings.

Humbel took the loss after allowing six runs, four of which were earned. Casey Smith earned the complete game victory despite allowing eight hits. She let in just the one run and had three strikeouts to go with two walks.
