UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – For the second consecutive day, the Ursuline softball team battled a program from the highly-respected Ohio Athletic Conference. After earning a split against Baldwin Wallace on Sunday, the Arrows didn’t fare as well on Monday when they visited John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks took game one 5-0 and then put together a late rally to win the finale, 5-4.

Ursuline is now 7-17 overall while John Carroll finishes the day at 18-8 overall.

Game One: John Carroll 5, Ursuline 0
John Carroll pitcher Rachel Byrnes was in command all afternoon and earned the first no-hitter of her young career. The hurler issued three walks as junior shortstop Michele Hare (twice) and junior first baseman Natalie Huggins were each able to reach base safely.

Byrnes got all the support she needed when the Blue Streaks pushed four runs across home plate in the bottom of the second inning.

Left fielder Morgan Robinson singled to center to start the inning and then moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the first run of the game on a single to right field by third baseman Michaela Mackey.

Center fielder Erica Chiudioni later doubled home a run and then catcher Mackenzie Griffin laced a two-run single through the right side to make it a 4-0 game.

The Blue Streaks tacked on a run for good measure in the fifth on a double by Robinson that brought home Nicole Fluharty who entered the game as a pinch runner for first baseman Ally Kleinhans.

Byrnes improved to 13-1 with the victory while Ursuline senior pitcher Ciara Seymour took the loss and fell to 3-8.

Game Two: John Carroll 5, Ursuline 4
The Arrows held a 4-1 lead in the middle of the sixth but John Carroll scored three in the sixth and won it in the home half of the seventh, 5-4.

John Carroll took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when second baseman Samantha Becker singled and later scored on a Mackenzie Griffin double.

Ursuline answered with a three-run fifth to take a 3-1 lead. After the leadoff batter was retired, sophomore second baseman Sam Roberts and senior catcher Megan Passwaiter notched back-to-back singles before junior first baseman Natalie Huggins drilled a double that tied the game at one.

Senior third baseman Ciara Seymour then came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run double that brought home both Passwaiter and Huggins to give the Arrows a two-run lead.

Huggins provided junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell with some breathing room in the sixth when she singled home freshman Rachel Jalowiec who entered earlier in the inning as a pinch runner for the UC hurler.

John Carroll evened the game with three runs in the home half of the sixth. The inning started with an Ursuline error and the next two batters singled before another Arrow miscue allowed JCU to knot the game at four. In the seventh, another Ursuline error allowed the JCU runner to score the game-winning run.

Maxwell was dealt the loss despite allowing just one earned run. Ursuline was charged with five errors that resulted in four unearned scores.

JCU’s Trisha Pike picked up the win to even her record at 4-4. She pitched the last 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Gina Tosti and limited Ursuline to just one run.
