PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Ursuline and Baldwin Wallace both came into Sunday’s (April 14) doubleheader looking for a win to halt a losing streak. Both teams got that much-needed victory as the two clubs split the doubleheader. Ursuline won game one on an 8-5 count before the Yellow Jackets took game two, 6-2.

The freshmen led the way as the trio of Alison Porter, Rachel Wells and Jayla Garner were a combined 8-15 (.533) with five runs scored on Sunday.

Ursuline is now 7-15 overall while Baldwin Wallace ended the day at 14-10.

Game One: Ursuline 8, Baldwin Wallace 5
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Arrows answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to even the score.

It was a 2-2 game until the top of the sixth inning when Baldwin Wallace took the lead on a two-out single by Brittany Lightel that plated pinch runner Kate Carabin.

The Arrows responded in a big way and hung six on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Rachel Wells started the rally with a one-out single to right and then senior Ciara Seymour worked a walk. Both runners eventually moved up one station on a wild pitch to put two in scoring position for junior shortstop Michele Hare.

Hare, playing in her first game since March 23, grounded out to the third baseman but Wells was able to come home and knot the game at 3-3.

Junior Sarah Maxwell had not recorded a plate appearance since March 28 but was summoned to pinch hit by head coach Sue Woodford. Woodford’s call paid off as Maxwell lined a shot up the middle that scored Seymour and gave Ursuline the 4-3 lead.

Freshman Alison Porter singled to left center and then her classmate Jayla Garner walked to load the bases. Sophomore Sam Roberts followed with a single to right center that scored two and then Garner and Porter each scored themselves when senior Megan Passwaiter singled to right center.

The Yellow Jackets stung Seymour for two runs in the top of the sixth but she hung on to earn her third victory of the season.

Baldwin Wallace’s Nikki Peskura (1-3) worked the six-inning complete game but was docked for eight runs, all of which were earned.

Game Two: Baldwin Wallace 6, Ursuline 2
The Yellow Jackets scored five runs (four of which were earned) in the top of the first inning off junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell and the Arrows never were able to climb out of the bunker.

Ursuline got one run back in the second when freshman Rachel Wells doubled and eventually scored on a single by classmate Alison Porter. The Arrows also got to Baldwin Wallace’s Tabitha Murray in the sixth when junior Michele Hare singled and scored on a Porter double to make it a 5-2 game but Murray helped her own cause with a homer in the seventh to decide the final margin.

Murray earned the win and improved to 12-6 while Maxwell recorded eight strikeouts but was dealt the loss and dipped to 3-7.
