Ursuline vs. Mount Ida Box Score / Ursuline vs. Pitt-Greensburg Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arrows beat Mount Ida in the season opener (7-0) before dropping the second game of the day to Pitt-Greensburg, 3-2.
Game One: Ursuline 7, Mount Ida 0
Behind a terrific effort from junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell, the Arrows won their season opener over Mount Ida College, 7-0.
Maxwell went the distance and surrendered just one hit and that didn’t come until the sixth inning. She recorded seven strikeouts, tying her career-high (vs. Alvernia University – March 7, 2011). By not walking a batter, she faced just one hitter above the minimum.
Ursuline took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior third baseman Ciara Seymour homered to left field. The Arrows tacked on three more runs in both the fourth and fifth to decide the final margin.
Seymour started things again in the fourth when she sigled with one out. Her classmate Samantha Gauvin walked and then junior shortstop Michele Hare belted a three run homer to give Maxwell some breathing room.
In the fifth, sophomore center fielder Samantha Roberts singled and senior left fielder Megan Passwaiter reached safely on an error before junior first baseman Natalie Huggins laced a double to center field that plated Roberts.
Maxwell then helped her own cause with a two-out double to left field that brought home Huggins and Gauvin to make it a 7-0 game.
Game Two: Pitt-Greensburg 3, Ursuline 2
The Arrows (1-1) and Bobcats (4-1) each scored one in the first and one in the middle innings but Pitt-Greensburg pushed the deciding run across with two outs in the seventh to win the non-conference affair.
Ursuline took advantage of a Pitt-Greensburg error to bring home the game’s first run. Senior left fielder Megan Passwaiter worked a one out walk and then junior first baseman Natalie Huggins singled to left. The ball was misplayed by the left fielder and allowed Passwaiter to score all the way from first.
The Bobcats matched the UC run in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring single by second baseman Morgan Russo and took the lead in the second on a solo homer by right fielder Caitlin Tobin.
Pitt-Greensburg’s lead was short-lived. Ursuline tied the game in the top of the fifth after senior second baseman Lauren Grana doubled and advanced to third on a fly ball to right that was hit by Roberts. Grana knotted the game at 2-2 when she touched home on a groundout by Huggins.
Third baseman Amanda Shepard started the bottom of the seventh with a double off UC junior pitcher Sarah Maxwell before the hurler retired the next two batters. Shepard advanced to third in the process and eventually scored the walk-off run on an infield error.
Maxwell took the tough-luck loss to fall to 1-1. She allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits while walking just one batter. She equaled her career-high of seven strikeouts in her 6 2/3 innings of work.
Pitt-Greensburg’s Marley Lafferty earned the win to improve to 2-0. She went the distance and allowed a pair of runs, only one of which was earned. Lafferty matched Maxwell’s seven strikeouts and scattered just three hits.
