The Ursuline Arrows closed out the 2011-12 regular season with a doubleheader against Urbana University at home on Saturday morning/afternoon. The games, which started at 10:00 a.m. in below 40 degree conditions, both went to Urbana.
In game one, Urbana went up 1-0 in the top of the first, before Ursuline responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. The scoring continued as the Blue Knights reclaimed the lead in the second with four runs and extended the lead to 7-2 with a run in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Arrows cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Urbana added an insurance run in the seventh and closed out game one with a 8-4 victory.
In the first inning, Ursuline scored both of its runs on just one hit and three errors. In the fifth, back-to-back triples by Miranda Boggs and Lauren Grana, plus a RBI-fielder's choice scored two for the Arrows. For the game, Samantha Roberts went 2-4 with a run scored, while Boggs was 1-2 with two runs scored and a sacrifice.
In game two, pitching took over early in the game as Ursuline led 2-1 in the seventh inning. Both of Ursuline's runs were unearned, scoring one in the second and one in the fourth. Urbana scored its only run in the second as well, on three-straight singles.
However, from the seventh inning on, hitting took control. Urbana tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh and took a 5-2 lead in the eighth. Ursuline rallied and Boggs' two-out double, which just missed being a game-winning home run, tied the game at 5-5 and sent it into the ninth inning.
In the ninth, the Blue Knights scored twice as two errors led to a pair of runs. Ursuline was unable to rally in the ninth, losing 7-5 in extra innings.
Roberts once again collected two hits, going 2-4 with a run scored and two batted in. Megan Passwaiter was 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Pitching for the Arrows, Sarah Maxwell was impressive early, with three of her first four innings going one, two, three. She went eight innings and up five runs, but didn't factor in the decision.
The Arrows close the regular season and will now wait to hear word on the Ohio Independent Championship Tournament, which will take place this coming week. Seeding, game location, opponents, and more are being determined - and should be announced today or tomorrow. Check back with UrsulineArrows.com for more details about the OIC Tournament.
