HUNTING VALLEY, Ohio  – The Ursuline College soccer team turned in a dominant second half to defeat visiting Wheeling Jesuit University, 3-1, at University School on Friday (Oct. 26) afternoon.

UC’s third straight win improved the club to 9-5 overall while Wheeling Jesuit fell to 4-11-3.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first when Melinda Earnest recorded her first goal of the season in the 36th minute off a lob from the right side courtesy of Morgan Headings. Ursuline outshot Wheeling Jesuit by three (9-6) in the first half, but the Arrows cranked it up a notch after the intermission.

Senior Hillary Crookston tied the match at one in the 52nd minute when she scored on a penalty kick, marking the second straight match that the senior defender has scored.

Just over 13 minutes later, junior Amanda Levaskevich crossed a ball for sophomore forward Paige Rowan and she dragged the ball past the goalline to put UC up 2-1. Freshman Vanessa Consiglio – who took seven total shots in the match – provided some breathing room with her seventh goal of the season in the 69th minute which came on a long ball from classmate Giuliana Pugliese.

In the second half, Ursuline outshot the opposition 11-0. Wheeling Jesuit’s goalkeeper Holly Kraus made five stops in each half while UC senior goalie Rachael Smith made two saves to pick up her ninth victory of the season.

The Arrows play their final “home” match of the season on Sunday (Oct. 28) when they take on Urbana University at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be held at Laurel School’s Butler Campus due to unplayable conditions at the Ursuline College Soccer Field.

It’s an extremely important match in terms of determining seeds for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. With a win, Ursuline would jump Urbana and become the third seed, thus setting up a date with Cedarville University. If the Arrows fall to Urbana, Ursuline will take on regular season champion Trevecca Nazarene.

Senior Day festivities will go on as scheduled at halftime as the program honors Rachael Smith, Alix Shanks, Heather Beachy, Amanda Shay, Hillary Crookston and Rebecca Dort. The broadcast will still be available on the Ursuline College Sports Network with Max Radigan providing the play-by-play.
