Soccer advances into semi's with dominating win over Malone

Senior Jaimie Grindle
The Ursuline College soccer team, seeded #3, advanced into the semifinal round of the Ohio Independent Championship Tournament with a 6-1 victory over the #6 seed Malone Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon at The Laurel School soccer field.

The Arrows played a flawless first half, scoring all six goals - with five of them coming on the teams first six shots and covering a span of less than 13 minutes. Just 1:42 into the game, Paige Rowan took a long pass from Leah Sweet and went right to the goal, giving UC the early lead.

However, she was not done - just 19 seconds later she received another long pass from Cassie Fischer in almost the same spot and took the ball right to the goal.

Just over three minutes later, Paige participated in the team's third goal as she made a tremendous move on the sideline to get by her defender and serve a ball down the line to Jaimie Grindle, who used her speed to run right around the defense and directly to the goal. The goal put her into a tie with Julie Wyman for the most points ever collected by a Ursuline soccer player (105 points).

Grindle wasted no time taking full control of the record, as she assisted on the teams fourth goal - only four minutes later. This time Fischer received a pass from Grindle, who made another long run around the defense. The pass came across the box, right to the feet of Fischer, who controlled the ball and slammed it into the back of the net.

Grindle, however, was just getting warmed up. Four minutes later, she moved into a tie with Wyman for the all-time goal scoring record, as she scored her 45th career goal on an unassisted shot from about the 18. It was only a matter of time until Grindle claimed that record for herself - and then with just nine minutes remaining in the half - Jaimie scored the teams sixth goal and her 46th of her career, establishing a new school record.

With the hat-trick and the assist, Jaimie now has collected a school record 46 goals to go with 18 career assists, which stands just two behind the school record, giving her a school record total of 110 career points.

With the game in hand, the Arrows managed to play almost the entire roster - as 23 players played - with most averaging over 15 minutes of action.

Ursuline advances to the semifinals, where they will face #2 Walsh University. The semifinals and finals will be played at Brush High School, as the #1 seed Notre Dame plays host to the weekends action. Ursuline and Walsh will play at 5:00 p.m., followed by the second semifinal game at 7:00 p.m. More details will be released in the near future - with directions, parking information, and if tickets are being sold.
