It's National Girls and Women's In Sports Day, a national holiday the Arrows Athletic Department holds dear as a Division II college sponsoring solely female athletics. The Arrows hosted a free community youth sports clinic to celebrate on Sunday, February 4
th.
UC Athletics invited youth sport enthusiasts grades K-8 to come out to the Stano Athletic Center to sample their wide range of 11 NCAA sports. Participants were split into groups based on their grade and age. They spent time with each sport, rotating through to play softball, cross country, track & field, lacrosse, tennis, stunt, golf, basketball, bowling, soccer and volleyball.
Senior STUNT Captain, Sierra Rodriquez said "Girls in sports day was an amazing opportunity. Being a part of showing and teaching young girls what STUNT is has been one of my favorite memories as an athlete. These girls were so brave for letting us put them in the air!"
The Student Athletic Advisory Committee President, Maleah Gibbons led the volleyball station. She reflected on the day, "Women in Sports day was an amazing opportunity to connect with the girls in our community! Being able to express our love and teach them a little about our sport brought so much joy to my heart!"
The Arrows saw over 100 registrants for this event and welcomed 90 volunteers from the athletic department and college campus. In addition to participating in all of the sports, the young athletes had the opportunity to write letters to their favorite professional athletes, do arts and crafts with the Ursuline College Women's Center, and win sports themed prizes!
"We are so proud of our student-athletes and staff for their hard work towards empowering young girls and women in sport. Our Arrows are wonderful role models for these youth athletes, embodying the strength and character to succeed in whatever they put their minds to." Arrows Sports Information Director, Grace Gravino, commented.
The Arrows NGWSD Clinic was one of more than 500 events taking place across the country for National Girls & Women in Sports Day (#NGWSD).
The Day is devoted to recognizing the progress of girls and women in sports, and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women. The Day is powered by the Women's Sports Foundation who is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year!
The Arrows would like to extend a special thank you to the Orange Community Recreation & Education Department for their partnership on this event! An additional thank you goes to the DiLauro family for their generous pizza donation for our participants.
