Arrows Fall to Chargers in Final Game of 2021

The Ursuline College basketball team battled visiting Hillsdale College for four quarters in a tough 79-89 loss on the afternoon of New Years Eve.

Both offenses started strong in the opening quarter. The Arrows held a seven point lead four separate times in the first 10 minutes of play and controlled the pace of the game with their six made three point shots, shooting 60 percent behind the arc. Ursuline led 24-22 at the end of the period.
 
Hillsdale outscored the Arrows 23-9 in the second quarter after going 8-for-16 from the field as a team while Ursuline struggled to find the hoop, shooting just 31 percent.
 
The Chargers' battle in the second quarter brought them to a 12 point lead at the break, the score 45-33.
 
Ursuline fought to overcome their deficit in the third quarter and outshot the Chargers 25-23. As both defenses held strong, the Arrows were unable to close the 10 point gap before the fourth and final quarter.
 
The Chargers went on a five point run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away and build their lead up to 79-65 with 5:08 remaining in the game. The Arrows closed the gap to six points after a three pointer from Patience Ashaolu and two free throws from Michaela Cloonan but were unable to finish for a win in the final minutes of play. Hillsdale won 89-79 in the Arrows final game of 2021.
 
Michaela Cloonan paced the Arrows with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals while Bekah Green added 22 points, shooting 9-for-19 in the paint. Madison Cloonan had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists while. Riley Stopp added in 7 points and 3 rebounds while Ashalou and Pospisil grabbed 6 points each. 
 
Hillsdale shot 59 percent from the field (34-of-58) and went 10-for-20 from the three-point line. The Arrows were 29-for-67 (43 percent) from the field and 12-for-37 from deep. The Chargers won the rebounding battle 35-22.
 
Ursuline will travel to Findlay University on Sunday to take on the Oilers. Tipoff is set for 1:00pm and will be streamed live on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
