Slippery Rock, PA - Slippery Rock outlasted the Arrows 68-64 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night.
Alyssa Evans started the Arrows off with a three-pointer at the 9:40 mark from an assist by Michaela Cloonan. Slippery Rock transitioned down the court for an easy layup to make the score 3-2. Both teams struggled to string stops together throughout the first quarter, which led to the back-and-forth battle. At the end of the first quarter the score was 18-16. The Arrows shot 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc.
In the second quarter, a turnover from Slippery Rock and a basket made by Michaela Cloonan sparked a 14-0 run for the Arrows. The media timeout buzzed at the 4:06 mark which gave Slippery Rock the chance to regroup before finishing the first half. The Rock came out of the timeout aggressively and attacked the Arrows defense to claw their way back into the game. The Arrows led at half 42-30 by improving their field goal percentage and three-point percentage to 75%.
The Arrows came out flat in the second half and were outscored 22-38. In the final minutes of the game both teams went head-to-head to hold the lead. At the 3:17 mark, senior Bekah Green hit a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 62. Slippery Rock would score again but gave Madison Cloonan a chance to tie the game at the free throw line. Madison hit both shots to make the score 64-64. The Rock would move on to dominate in the paint and hold off the Arrows 68-64.
The Arrows were led by Michaela Cloonan who finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Bekah Green had 13 points while Madison Cloonan posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Ursuline travels to Lake Superior State University on Sunday to take on the Lakers at 3:00 pm.
