Five Score in Double Figures Lead Ursuline to Win over Ohio Valley

The Ursuline College basketball team defeated visiting Ohio Valley 83-66 on Monday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The two teams battled back and forth in the opening quarter after Ursuline built a 7-3 lead on a jumper by freshman Aubrie Marsh. The game was tied three different times in the first ten minutes before freshman Alyssa Evans had a traditional three-point play after a layup and a foul made it 17-14. Evans followed with a three-pointer to make it 20-14 at the end of one.
 
Junior Sam Jenkins and Freshman Tamara Mathis had back-to-back jumpers to start the second quarter and then Jenkins followed with a three-pointer to make it a 27-14 Arrow lead with 8:07 to play before the half. Freshman Patience Ashalou added a three-pointer to make it 30-16.
 
The Fighting Scots battled back to cut the deficit to 32-28 before Marsh and Evans had back-to-back baskets to make it 38-28 with under 1:30 to play in the half.
 
Ursuline took a 41-32 lead into the break.
 
The Arrows opened the game up by outscoring Ohio Valley 20-9 in the third quarter.
 
CAREER HIGHS
 
Jenkins had an Ursuline career-best 17 points to go along with four steals. Marsh also notched a career-best with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds.
 
Mathis finished with a career-high 11 assists.
 
Junior Katrina Scheuvront had a career-high 11 rebounds in 13 minutes.
 
BALANCED ATTACK
 
The Arrows had five players in double-figures with Jenkins leading the way with 17 points. Marsh, Mathis and Evans finished with 14 points each while senior Julia Cardwell added 11.
 
Ursuline finished with a season-high 21 assists on 32 made field goals.
 
WINNING THE BOARDS
 
Ursuline won the rebounding battle 49-29 on the night including 20-7 on the offensive end. Scheuvront led the Arrows with 11 while Marsh had eight and Cardwell added seven.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
 
Ursuline shot 41 percent (32-of-78) from the field while going 8-of-24 from the three-point line.
Ohio Valley was 25-of-65 (39 percent) from the floor and 7-of-20 from three.
The Arrows were 11-of-14 from the free throw line while the Scots were 9-of-14.
 
UP NEXT
 
Ursuline will play a pair of non-conference games before the break beginning with a home match-up against Wheeling University on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
