The Ursuline College basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 96-65 setback against Michigan Tech University on Friday evening.

Ursuline shot 6-for-16 from the field in the first quarter after sophomore
Sarah Lairson scored a career-high seven points in the period but a late basket by the Huskies gave Michigan Tech a 16-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Trailing 19-17 after a layup by junior
Julia Cardwell, the Arrows got back-to-back three pointers from senior
Paige Salisbury and freshman
Kaylin Burdick to build a 23-19 lead with 8:16 remaining in the second quarter.

Michigan Tech responded with a 9-0 run of its own to regain the lead at 28-23 just prior to the second quarter media timeout.

The Huskies outscored the Arrows 30-21 in the second to build a 46-36 advantage at the intermission.

Third Quarter
Â
The game changed in the third quarter as the Arrows turned the ball over seven times that led to the Huskies shooting 12-for-19 from the floor and outscoring Ursuline 30-13 in the period.

Ursuline's offense got a brief spark from junior
Ky Crevison who hit a pair of three-pointers off the bench.

Michigan Tech led 76-49 after three quarters.

Ursuline shot 23-for-57 (40 percent) from the floor and went 5-for-12 from behind the three-point line and 14-for-19 from the free throw line.

Michigan Tech shot 37-for-74 (50 percent) from the floor and went 10-for-25 from the three-point line and 12-for-19 from the free throw line.

Ursuline turned the ball over 24 times while Michigan Tech had 13 miscues. The Huskies won the rebounding battle 45-35.

Individual Leaders

Ursuline had five players score in double-figures led by freshman
Jennah Taylor who finished with 12 points in 25 minutes. She went 4-for-12 from the floor and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line while grabbing six rebounds.

Cardwell finished with 10 points and seven rebounds while freshman
Bekah Green, Lairson and Crevison all added 10 points each. Green dished out five assists in her first collegiate game.

Ursuline will have a quick turnaround as they take on host Ferris State on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. The Bulldogs opened their season with an 80-55 win over Davis & Elkins on Friday.
