The Ursuline College basketball team could not overcome a slow start in a 65-53 non-conference loss at home to visiting Northwood University on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams went nearly three minutes before the Timberwolves got on the board with a pair of free throws to take a 2-0 lead. The game's first field goal came at the 6:57 mark of the first quarter on a three-pointer by Northwood to make it 5-0.

The Arrows got on the board at the 4:33 mark of the opening quarter on a jumper from junior Sarah Larison to make it 6-2. The only other field goal in the period came in the final seconds on a jumper from junior
Julia Cardwell to make it 13-4 in favor of Northwood after one.

Ursuline shot 2-of-13 from the field in the first quarter and were 0-of-2 from the three-point line.

The lead grew to 17-4 in the opening possessions of the second quarter, but the Arrows limited Northwood to 13 points in the second quarter to trail 26-14 at the intermission.

Late in the third quarter, freshman
Kaylin Burdick buried a jumper to bring Ursuline back to within 10 at 44-34.

Ursuline got within eight at 60-52 after a basket from senior
Paige Salisbury, but Northwood was able to convert from the free throw line late in the game to pick up the victory.

Ursuline shot a season-low 30 percent (17-of-57) from the field and were just 3-for-14 from behind the three-point line. The Arrows were 16-of-20 from the free throw line.

The Arrows held Northwood to just 35 percent shooting from the field (20-of-57) and 10-of-31 from behind the three-point line.

Ursuline was paced by Burdick's career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds while Cardwell added 14 points and eight boards. Salisbury finished with 11 points and dished out six assists.

The conference portion of the Ursuline schedule gets underway on Thursday when they host Davis & Elkins at 5:30 PM.
