Game Recap: Basketball |

Cardwell's Three-Pointer Leads Arrows to OT Win over Mercyhurst

The Ursuline College basketball team got a game-winning three-pointer from junior Julia Cardwell in overtime to knock off visiting Mercyhurst 76-73 in overtime on Tuesday evening.

In a game that was tied seven times and featured 11 lead changes, it was only fitting that it would come down to the final seconds in overtime to decide a winner.

The Arrows led 17-15 after a back-and-forth first quarter but the defensive effort in the second quarter by Ursuline put them in control at the break. Ursuline limited Mercyhurst to just eight points on 3-of-13 from the field in the second quarter to take a 31-23 lead at the half.

The third quarter played out similar to the first with Ursuline holding a 17-15 scoring edge in the frame but Mercyhurst put together a 25-point fourth quarter to erase a 59-48 Ursuline lead with under seven minutes to play.

Mercyhurst's Emily Shopene hit a three-pointer with 11 second remaining in regulation to tie the game 63-63 and send it to an extra period.

Junior Julia Cardwell took over in the overtime period as she hit a jumper with 1:22 to play to make it 71-70 and then converted on a pair of free throws to make it 73-70 with under a minute to play.

With only six seconds remaining, freshman Bekah Green found Cardwell on the right wing and she promptly buried the game-winning three-point shot to give the Arrows their first win of the young season.

Ursuline shot 27-of-64 (42 percent) from the field and went 7-of-18 (39 percent) from behind-the-arc while Mercyhurst was 29-of-74 (39 percent) from the field and 10-of-33 from the three-point line.

The Arrows were an impressive 15-for-18 from the free throw line and are now 54-of-67 (81 percent) on the season through four games.

Cardwell's 25 points on 8-of-13 from the field was a new career-high to go along with nine rebounds. Green finished with 14 points while senior Paige Salisbury had eight points, five assists and 10 rebounds. Junior Ky Crevison added eight points and five assists.

Ursuline will host Northwood University on Sunday, November 29 at 2:00 PM in a non-conference match-up. The game can be viewed live on the Great Midwest Digital Network starting at 1:45pm.
