The Ursuline College basketball team ran away with a 105-85 victory over visiting West Liberty on Tuesday evening in the Jane and Lee Seidman Gymnasium.
Â
Back and Forth at The Start
Â
After the Arrows started the game on a 7-2 run, West Liberty battled back to make it 9-7 with just under six minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Hilltoppers took their first lead of the game on a Marissa Brown free throw to make it 12-11 but the lead did not last long after senior
Laney Lewis buried a jumper to make it 13-12.
Â
Ursuline led 17-15 after one quarter.
Â
First Half Run
Â
The Arrows started the second quarter by allowing a jumper to Brown to tie the game at 17-17 but answered with a 10-0 run sparked by the first career basket from freshman Sarah Lairson. Ursuline then got a jumper to go from Lewis and a layup in transition from sophomore Ky Crevison to make it 23-17 and Lewis and fellow senior
Camille Gist buried back-to-back jumpers to make it 27-17.
Â
West Liberty Answered Back
Â
The Hilltoppers answered the Arrows run after Audrey Tingle hit a three-pointer and Johnie Olkosky followed with another triple to make it 31-24. West Liberty buried its third straight three when Brandi Beader connected to make it 31-27.
Â
West Liberty finished the quarter on a 16-8 run to take a 43-39 lead at the break.
Â
The Game Changed When…
Â
Ursuline battled back to start the third quarter when senior
Camryn Hill hit a layup followed by a three-pointer to tie the game 46-46. Hill went onto score nine straight points for the Arrows as they built their lead to 50-46.
Â
Hill scored 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting in the third quarter while the Arrows posted a 40-point quarter
Â
The 40-points in the quarter were the most scored in a quarter by an Arrows team dating back to the first quarter of the 2015-16 season in a 128-57 win over Bluefield State.
Â
Â
The Defense Stepped Up
Â
Almost as impressive as scoring 40 points in the third quarter was the Ursuline effort on the defensive end of the floor. They allowed West Liberty to score just 15 points on 6-for-19 shooting in the third quarter.
Â
Senior Scoring
Â
The three Ursuline seniors combined to 74 of Ursuline's 105 points. Hill finished with 27 points (12-for-16), Gist had a career-high 24 points (9-for-14) and Lewis finished with 23 points (9-for-21) while also dishing out 11 assists and grabbing seven rebounds.
Â
Helping Hand
Â
Ursuline dished out a season-high 31 assists with Lewis leading the way with 11 and junior Paige Salisbury picking up eight.
Â
Over the Century Mark
Â
Ursuline scored 100 points or more for the first time this season and for the first time since the Semi-Finals of last season's Great Midwest Tournament in a 103-74 win over Davis & Elkins. The Arrows were over 100 points four times last season.
