The Ursuline College lacrosse team clinched the first-ever G-MAC championship with an 18-11 win over visiting Alderson Broaddus on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
The Arrows got on the board in the opening four minutes when juniors
Maddie Kipp and
Sarah Kiefer scored back-to-back goals to make it 2-0.
Alderson Broaddus answered with three consecutive goals to take a brief 3-2 lead before Kipp scored again to tie the game 3-3. The Battlers came right back with two goals of their own to take a 5-3 lead but once again sophomore
Cydney Bartlett and Kipp found the back of the net to make it 5-5.
The two teams traded goals the remainder of the first half before the duo of Bartlett and Kipp capped the half with a pair of goals to give Ursuline an 8-6 advantage at the intermission.
The Battlers started the second half by cutting the Arrows lead to one at 9-8. Kipp and junior
Anika Aberegg quickly made it 11-8.
Ursuline built their biggest lead of the game with back-to-back goals with a man-up to make it 16-10 with 7:47 to play. Freshman
Hayley Mazreku, the G-MAC's leading scorer, finished the scoring with a goal at the 2:06 mark to make it 18-11.
The Arrows outshot the Battlers 40-22 while also winning the draw control battle 23-8. Ursuline also picked up 17 ground balls compared to 13 for Alderson Broaddus.
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Bowerman made seven saves. Kipp led Ursuline with five goals while Bartlett finished with four and freshman
Abigail Neeley had three.Â
Ursuline will close out the regular season against Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM.Â
