Ursuline Wins First-Ever G-MAC Championship 72-65

The Ursuline College basketball team won its first ever Great Midwest Athletic Championship with a 72-65 win over Cedarville on Saturday afternoon in the Seidman Gymnasium. With the win, the Arrows will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history for any sport. The bracket will be announced on the NCAA website on Sunday evening at 10:00 PM EST.
 
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first when Kayla Linkous started the game with a three-pointer but the Arrows answered right back with a three-pointer from freshman Brigan Wymer and a pair of free throws to make it 5-3.
 
With Ursuline leading 7-6, junior Erica Huber got a layup followed by a layup from sophomore Camryn Hill and a jumper from redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis to make it 13-6 with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter. Huber closed the first quarter with a three-pointer to give Ursuline a 19-12 lead after one.
 
After Ursuline built a 22-16 lead early in the second quarter, Cedarville went on a 6-0 run capped by a layup from Breanne Waterworth to tie the game 22-22 with 7:05 remaining in the half. Huber answered back with layup and drew a foul to complete the three-point play to put the Arrows back in front 29-24 and Hill added a jump shot to make it 31-24 with 5:09 to play in the half. Hill followed with another three-pointer to push the lead to eight but Cedarville answered right back with a 7-0 run of their own to pull within one late in the half.
 
Ursuline held a 40-38 lead at the break despite getting outscored 24-19 in the second quarter.
 
Cedarville took the lead with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter after  Whitney Robinson hit a three-pointer to make it 45-43.The Arrows came right back with a run of their own after Hill connected on another three-pointer to reclaim the lead at 50-49.
 
Cedarville closed the third quarter on a 5-0 run and held a 55-50 lead going to the fourth.
 
Linkous hit three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to build Cedarville lead to 58-50 with 9:49 remaining in the game. Hill answered back with an and-one to make it 58-53 and freshman Christiana Jefferson banked in a three from the wing to pull the Arrows within two at 58-56. Wymer hit a pair of free throws to cap the 8-0 run and bring the score back to even at 58 all.
 
With the game tied once again at 65-65 with 3:21 remaining, Hill hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to put the Arrows ahead for the final time at 68-65. Lewis hit a pair of clutch free throws down the stretch to build the lead to 72-65.
 
The Arrows outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-10 over the final 10 minutes of play. Ursuline limited Cedarville to just 29 percent shooting in the second half.
 
Ursuline shot 36 percent (21-for-59) from the field and went 8-for-24 from behind the three point line while Cedarville shot 40 percent (20-for-50) from the field and were 8-for-20 from three. The Arrows forced 23 turnovers while committing just seven of their own miscues and went 22-for-27 from the free throw line while the Yellow Jackets were nearly perfect at 17-for-18.
 
The Arrows were led by 19 points from Hill on 7-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-8 from behind the arc and Lewis who finished with 16 points and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Huber added 13 points and Wymer chipped in 11 points and four steals. Jefferson had seven points and eight assists in her 22 minutes of work.
 
Ursuline will now await the NCAA Division II Selection Show that will take place on Sunday evening at 10:00 PM EST to see who their first round opponent will be. The show can be watched live on the NCAA.com website or on ursulinearrows.com.
