The Ursuline College basketball team took sole possession of second place in the G-MAC with a 70-58 win on the road at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday. The win is the first-ever in program history for Ursuline.
Ursuline fell behind early 8-2 in the first quarter before junior Erica Huber finished a layup in transition and sophomore Camryn Hill buried a three-pointer to make it an 8-7 game at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter. The Arrows took their first lead on a layup by redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis to make it 11-10. The Panthers ended the quarter with a 16-15 advantage.
The Arrows reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter after freshman Brigan Wymer and Christiana Jefferson added back-to-back baskets to make it 19-16. The two teams traded baskets and the game was tied at 25-25 and again at 27-27 before Kentucky Wesleyan pulled away for a 33-29 lead at the break.
Ursuline's offense exploded for 24 points in the third quarter while the Kentucky Wesleyan offense managed just five points in the period. Trailing 37-36, the Arrows went on a 9-0 run to build a 45-37 lead. Ursuline ended the third on an 8-0 run to take a 53-39 lead to the fourth.
The Arrows saw their lead trimmed to 55-47 with 6:39 to play in the game and quickly went on a 7-0 run to pull away for the final time.
Ursuline shot 44 percent (31-for-71) from the field and were just 12 percent (3-for-25) from behind the three-point line while Kentucky Wesleyan was 35 percent (21-for-59) from the floor and 5-for-14 from three. The Arrows turned the ball over just eight times while forcing the Panthers into 15 miscues. Ursuline won the rebounding battle 42-37, including 16-13 on the offensive side.
The Arrows were led by Wymer who finished with 18 points on 8-for-16 from the floor. Lewis finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds on 8-for-11 from the floor and also had five more blocked shots and three assists. Huber added 11 points and also dished out three assists and had two steals.
Ursuline will return home on Thursday to take on Ohio Valley University at 5:30 PM. The Arrows won the first meeting of the season 84-53 on January 9 in West Virginia.Â
