The Ursuline College basketball team won its seventh straight game and improved to 20-3 on the season with a 102-53 win over visiting Salem International University on Saturday afternoon.
The Arrows (20-3, 9-2) got out to an early lead after a jumper by junior
Erica Huber made it 8-3 but a tough Tigers squad battled back to make it 8-7 with 4:44 to play in the first quarter. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the first quarter before the Arrows took a 17-14 lead after one.
Ursuline used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to build the lead to nine at 26-17 with 5:36 to play before halftime and extended the lead to double digits on a layup by redshirt sophomore
Laney Lewis to make it 33-22 with 3:17 to play in the half. Huber capped off the scoring in the first half with a three-pointer to make it 43-26 at the break.
The Arrows used a 29-point third quarter to open up their lead in the second half. Freshman
Brigan Wymer buried a three-pointer to make it 51-36 with 6:00 to play in the period. Senior
Raven-Symone Nelson knocked down a jumper to make it 58-40 with 4:01 to play.
Ursuline went on to outscore Salem 30-11 in the final period to seal their 12
th home win of the season in 14 games.The Arrows scored 100 points or more five times on the season, all at home.Â
The Arrows had six players score in double-figures on the afternoon led by freshman
Natalie Koenig who finished with 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor and 3-for-5 from three. Lewis added 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds while Wymer poured in 16 points. Nelson added 14 points and was 4-for-6 from behind-the-arc and freshman Christina Jefferson dropped in 12 points and six assists.
Ursuline shot 41 percent (32-for-78) from the field while Salem shot 30 percent (23-for-78) and went 6-for-25 from behind the three-point line. The Arrows finished 12-for-28 from three and went 26-for-35 from the free throw line. Ursuline outrebounded Salem 55-39 and blocked seven shots.
The Arrows will be idle until next Saturday when they travel to Cedarville to take on the league-leading Yellow Jackets. Ursuline currently sits one game behind Cedarville for the top spot in the G-MAC regular season standings. Â
