The Ursuline College basketball team closed out the 2016 calendar year with a 70-55 win over visiting Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of corner three-pointers from freshman Seina Adachi that forced Ursuline into an early timeout. After the break, the Arrows got on the board on a layup from sophomore
Natalie Koenig followed by a three-pointer from sophomore
Brigan Wymer to make it 6-5.
The Arrows continued their hot start from behind-the-arc when freshman
Julia Cardwell buried a three-pointer as did senior
Erica Huber to make it 14-8 midway through the first quarter. Ursuline held a 22-12 advantage at the end of one and finished the quarter on a 22-6 run.
Notre Dame pulled the lead to within nine at the 4:00 mark of the second quarter but a layup on a fast break from junior
Camryn Hill pushed the lead back to 11 at 28-17.
Ursuline took a 37-25 lead into the halftime break.
The Arrows used a strong third quarter outscoring the Falcons 21-13 in the frame to build their lead.
Ursuline shot 25-for-63 (40 percent) from the field and went 9-for-27 from three while Notre Dame finished 21-for-56 from the floor and 5-for-23 from behind-the-arc. The Arrow were 11-for-16 from the free throw line and forced 21 turnovers.
Huber led Ursuline with 30 points on 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 from three. She also had nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Wymer finished with 14 points on 6-for-10 from the field and had two steals while Hill added 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Arrows will open the defense of their 2016 G-MAC Championship on Thursday, January 5 when they host Davis & Elkins in a 5:30pm tip off.
