The Ursuline College basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 78-73 win over Wayne State on day one of the Bulldog Classic hosted by Ferris State University on Friday afternoon.

The Arrows got out to an early 5-2 lead after a three-point shot by junior
Camryn Hill followed by a layup from redshirt Junior
Laney Lewis.

The two teams traded the lead and baskets over the first five minutes of the game with the game being tied three different times. Lewis extended the Arrows lead to 15-11 with a layup with 3:40 to play in the opening quarter but Wayne State pulled back to within one at 17-16 in the final two minutes.

Lewis converted on her first five attempts from the field for 10 points in the first half.

Sophomore
Natalie Koenig connected on a three-pointer and a layup late in the first quarter to give Ursuline a 22-18 lead after one.

The second quarter also saw the game tied three different times before Ursuline built a seven-point lead at 39-32 after Koenig hit another from beyond-the-arc. A lay up in the final :20 seconds of the half by Hill put Ursuline in front 43-37 at the break.

In the third quarter, freshman
Carly Koncz came off the bench to hit a pair of three-pointers for Ursuline to help build the lead to 51-44 with 6:27 to play in the quarter. Lewis added a layup to push the lead to double figures at 60-49.

Ursuline opened the fourth quarter with a 62-52 lead and extended it to as many as 12 before Wayne State made a late run. The Warriors used a three-pointer to pull within five at 73-68 with 2:38 to play.

After a pair of Hill free throws pushed the lead back to seven, Wayne State once again hit a three to make it 75-71. Senior
Erica Huber answered with a huge three-pointer to make it 78-71 with :33 seconds left.

Ursuline shot 46 percent (30-of-64) from the floor while Wayne State was 26-of-62 (42 percent). The Arrows were 9-for-23 from the three-point line while the Warriors were 8-for-19. The Arrows won the turnover battle 18-15 and were edged slightly in the rebounding category 40-37.

The Arrows were led by Lewis and Hill who both finished with 17 points each. Lewis was 8-for-13 from the floor and added 10 rebounds and dished out five assists. Hill was 6-for-10 from the floor and also had a pair of assists. Koenig finished with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting along with eight rebounds and five assists and Huber added 11 point, six rebounds and four assists.

Ursuline will remain in Michigan and take on the host Ferris State Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM.Â
