The Ursuline College basketball team overcame a season-high 25 turnovers to defeat Salem International University 72-51 on Thursday evening in Salem, West Virginia.
The Arrows raced out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter lead before the Tigers got on the board with 4:15 remaining in the quarter. Freshman Brigan Wymer (Delta/Delta) and Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay) both got layups followed by a three-pointer from junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna) to stake Ursuline to an early 7-0 lead.
Wymer added a three-pointer of her own as did freshman Christiana Jefferson (Toledo/Toledo Notre Dame) to make it 13-0. Salem took advantage of five early turnovers by Ursuline to answer with a 6-0 run over their own to cut the deficit to 17-9 late in the first.
The Tigers closed the quarter on a 13-2 run to make cut their deficit to 17-13 after one.
Ursuline used ball movement in the second quarter to help build the lead again. Wymer picked up three early assists including one to Huber for a three and another in transition to Hill for a layup as the Arrows built a 30-19 lead with 3:49 to play in the half.
Salem senior Samantha Aiken banked in a three-pointer as the first half expired to put the Arrows lead at 37-27 at the break.
Ursuline managed just eight points in the third quarter as Salem outscored the Arrows 10-8 in the period to make it 45-37 headed to the fourth.
Wymer started an 8-0 fourth quarter run with a steal and a score to help push the lead back to double digits at 53-40 with 7:48 to play. After the Tigers pulled to within 11 at 53-42, senior Raven Symone-Nelson (Morgan Park/Chicago, Illinois) connected from beyond-the-arc to make it 56-42 with 6:30 to play.
The Arrows closed the game on a 16-9 run to pull away in the fourth quarter.
Ursuline was led by Hill who posted her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. She added four blocked shot and two assists on the evening as well. Wymer finished with 13 points and three assists while freshman Natalie Koenig (Wauseson/Waueson) added 14 points. Lewis added 13 rebounds for Ursuline while Nelson picked up three steals.
The Arrows shot 39 percent (24-for-61) from the field and were 7-for-27 from behind-the-arc while the Tigers shot 26 percent (22-for-82) and were just 2-for-17 from the three-point line. Ursuline outrebounded Salem 57-48 in the game but the Tigers came away with 21 offensive rebounds. The Arrows finished the game 17-for-25 from the free throw line and had 14 assists on their 24 field goals.
