The Ursuline College basketball team suffered a 76-75 overtime loss to visiting Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon in the 2015-16 G-MAC opener.
The Arrows (10-1, 0-1) got out to their customary fast start at home when they opened the game on a 9-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by sophomore Camryn Hill (Strongsville/Strongsville). Hill extended the lead to 12-0 with a layup before Kentucky Wesleyan senior Jade Mills-Harris hit a three to make it 12-3.
Ursuline held a 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Arrows used a spark off the bench in senior Raven-Symone Nelson (Chicago, Illinois/Morgan Park). Nelson connected on four three-pointers in the quarter to build a 37-28 lead with 3:25 remaining in the half. Junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna) hit a three-pointer of her own to make it a double-digit lead at 40-30 just before the 3:00 mark of the half.
Nelson added another triple in the final ninety seconds of the half and the Arrows extended to a 48-34 advantage at the intermission.
Ursuline saw their hot shooting from the first half vanish in the third quarter as they missed on their first 11 field goal attempts of the second half. Still holding a 49-46 lead, freshman Brigan Wymer (Delta/Delta) ended the scoring drought with a jumper in transition to push the lead to 51-46 late in the third.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the fourth quarter before the Panthers tied the game 60-60 with 3:21 to play. After a pair of traded baskets, Kentucky Wesleyan took their first lead with 2:33 to play at 63-62. Freshman Natalie Koenig buried a three-pointer with 1:16 left to put Ursuline back on top 65-63 but Kentucky Wesleyan junior Erin Dorn hit a jumper with 19 seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Arrows found their offensive rhythm in the extra period and a lay-up by redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay) put the Arrows in front 73-67 with 2:26 to play in overtime. The Panthers took advantage of a couple of miscues by the Arrows to pull within one at 75-74 before junior Brittany Wells finished a layup for the game winner with one second remaining.
Ursuline shot 39 percent (22-for-57) on the game while Kentucky Wesleyan shot 40 percent (33-for-75) including 5-for-9 in the overtime period. The Arrows were an impressive 9-for-22 from beyond the arc while the Panthers finished 5-for-18 from the three-point line. Ursuline was 22-for-27 from the free throw line while Kentucky Wesleyan went 5-for-10. The Panthers won the turnover battle with 16 while forcing the Arrows into 20 miscues.
The Arrows had four players in double figures for the sixth time this season led by Hill who finished with 16. Huber added 14, while Nelson finished with 12 and Lewis added 11. Freshman Natalie Koenig had nine points and five assists. The loss snaps a seven game winning streak and is the first loss at home for Ursuline in their new gym.
Ursuline will remain home on Monday evening when they host Trevecca Nazarene University at 5:30 PM. The Trojans opened conference play with a 79-45 road loss at Cedarville on Saturday. The game will be streamed live on the UC Sports Network.
