The Ursuline College basketball team earned their seventh win in eight games and fourth in a row with a 56-48 road win over Mercyhurst.
The Arrows started out strong once again in the first quarter as they have in each game this season. Redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay) and sophomore Camryn Hill combined to score the first 10 points for the Arrows as they built a 10-2 lead early on.
Ursuline has outscored their opponents 205-149 in the first quarter of games this season. The Arrows shot an impressive 9-for-16 from the floor in the opening quarter and forced seven Mercyhurst turnovers.
The Arrows cooled off from the field in the second quarter and could not take advantage of 12 turnovers by the Lakers. Mercyhurst outscored the Arrows 15-12 in the frame to cut the deficit to 35-24 at the break.
Ursuline built their lead back to 16 at 46-30 when Lewis connected on a three-pointer from the wing. Mercyhurst closed the gap at the end of the quarter after a jumper by senior Adrienne Kloecker and a three by freshman Maria Lapertosa to make it 46-37 at the end of the third.
The Arrows defense got a spark in the fourth quarter on the defensive end after a steal by junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna) led to a three-pointer by freshman Brigan Wymer to make it 51-37. Freshman Christiana Jefferson (Toledo/Toledo Notre Dame) connected on a runner in the paint to push the lead to 53-37 with 6:32 to play.
Mercyhurst had one final push in the final minutes to cut the final deficit to 56-48. Â
Ursuline was paced by Lewis and Hill and Wymer who all finished with 13 points each. Hill added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Huber finished with 11 points to go along with five assists and five steals.
The Arrows shot a season-low 30 percent (19-for-63) from the field and 33 percent (6-for-18) from beyond-the-arc while Mercyhurst was 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field. Ursuline edge Mercyhurst in the rebounding battle 41-39 including 17-11 on the offensive end and forced a season-high 25 turnovers.
Ursuline will be back home to start a five-game home stand on Saturday against Seton Hill. The tipoff is set for 2:00 PM and will be streamed live on the UC Sports Network.
