The Ursuline College basketball team won a school record sixth consecutive game and now have won nine of their first 10 after an 89-67 win over visiting University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Arrows (9-1) came out of the gates quickly with a 7-0 run and never looked back. Junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna) picked up a layup and a three-pointer and freshman Brigan Wymer (Delta/Delta) added a jumper to spark the run.
Â
Sophomore Camryn Hill (Strongsville/Strongsville) added a layup and a three of her own to make it 14-3 with 5:41 to play in the first quarter. Ursuline built a 24-10 lead after one thanks in part to a strong defensive effort.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay) jump started the Arrows offense in the second quarter with a bucket and also connected from beyond-the-arc to make it 31-13 just two minutes into the second. Huber added back-to-back triples to make it a 25 point advantage at 40-15 with 7:07 left in the first half.
Â
The Racers ended the half on a mini-run but the Arrows took a 48-28 lead into the intermission.
Â
Northwestern Ohio outscored the Arrows 18-17 in the third quarter but Ursuline still led wire-to-wire in the game.
The Arrows were paced by three double-double performances. Huber finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-for-16 shooting and added 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Hill finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds and three blocked shots while Lewis added 10 points,13 rebounds and seven assists. Freshman Christiana Jefferson (Toledo/Toledo Notre Dame) added nine points and five assists while sophomore Camille Gist chipped in eight points off the bench.Â
Â
Ursuline shot 44 percent (35-for-80) from the field and hit nine three-pointers while the Racers shot 42 percent (27-for-64) and hit six three's. Ursuline won the rebounding battle 45-34 and forced 18 turnovers while committing 13 of their own.
Â
The six-game winning streak, which is the longest in program history, surpasses the five game streak that ran from February 2 through February 14 of last season.
Â
Ursuline will host Clarion on December 30 at 5:30 PM in their final game before G-MAC play begins in January. The game will be streamed live on the UC Sports Network. Â
