Arrows Cruise Past Falcons 81-59 Sunday Afternoon

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio-- The Ursuline College basketball team rebounded from a tough loss Tuesday night in impressive fashion with an 81-59 win over crosstown rival Notre Dame College on Sunday afternoon in the Seidman Gymnasium. The Arrows had five players in double figures for the fourth time in five games this season.

The Arrows (4-1) came out with a sense of urgency on the offensive end of the floor right from the tip. Freshman Natalie Koenig (Wauseon/Waueson) converted a lay-up off the jump ball and redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay) made it 4-0 after a quick jumper. Sophomore Camryn Hill (Strongsville/Strongsville) made it 6-2 with a bucket inside before the Falcons (2-4) cut into the lead at 8-6 after a jumper by senior Martha Nagbe. Lewis answered right back with a three-pointer to 11-6 midway through the first.

After the first media timeout, the Arrows built a 15-6 lead after a transition basket by Koenig and Lewis made it a double figure advantage with layup of her own. The Arrows led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Ursuline continued their lights out shooting from the field in the first half as they built a 34-20 advantage in the second quarter and eventually took a 43-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The Falcons cut into the Arrows lead in the third quarter as they pulled to within 11 at 45-34 with 6:27 remaining in the quarter but a three-pointer by junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna) and a layup by Hill capped a 5-0 spurt and the Arrows led by 16. Huber hit another three at the 2:21 mark of the third to build the lead to 22 at 60-38.

Ursuline shot a season-best 52 percent from the field (31-for-60) while holding Notre Dame to just 31 percent shooting (21-67). The Arrows shot 36 percent (5-for-14) from beyond the arc while the Falcons were just 15 percent (5-for-33). Ursuline went 14-for-19 from the free throw line and turned the ball over a season low eight times.

The Arrows were led by Huber, Lewis and Koenig who all finished with 17 points. Lewis pulled in 15 rebounds and also dished out six assists. Wymer added 11 points in her first start of the season while Christiana Jefferson (Toledo/Toledo Notre Dame) added 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor.

The win was the first-ever in school history for Ursuline over Notre Dame dating back to when both were members of NAIA.

The Arrows will remain at home and host Wilberforce University on Wednesday, December 2. The tip off is scheduled for 5:30 PM and the game will be streamed live on the UC Sports Network.
