The Ursuline College basketball team made it three straight victories to start the season with a 69-50 road win over Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon.
Ursuline (3-0) got out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after freshman Natalie Koenig (Wauseson/Wauseson) completed a three-point play followed by a three-pointer from junior Erica Huber (Anna/Anna).
With the game tied 11-11 with 4:14 remaining in the first Saint Joseph's (2-2) went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-11 lead. The Arrows closed the gap by the end of the period and trailed 21-16 after one.
The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter and the Pumas had a three-point lead until Koenig connected from beyond the arc to tie the game 29-29 with under a minute to play in the first half. The game remained tied headed into the intermission.
The Arrows broke the game open with their best defensive quarter of the young season in the third. Ursuline outscored Saint Joseph's 19-8 in the frame The Arrows sparked a 9-0 run to start the quarter after sophomore Camryn Hill (Strongsville/Strongsville) converted on a layup in the paint and a three-pointer to make it 34-29. Huber followed with another three to make it 37-29 early in the third.
Ursuline led 48-37 after three quarters and did not trail again.
The Arrows shot 41 percent from the field in the game including 50 percent in the second half. The defensive minded effort held Saint Joseph's to 30 percent shooting in the game from the field. Ursuline edged the Pumas 42-38 in the rebounding battle.
Ursuline was led by Huber who finished with 21 points, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. She also tallied four steals and was 7-for-14 from the floor in 34 minutes. Koenig and fellow freshman Brigan Wymer (Delta/Delta) each had 12 points. Ursuline also got eight points and 13 rebounds from Hill and eight points and a career-high 16 rebounds from redshirt sophomore Laney Lewis (Lynchburg/Lynchburg Clay).
The Arrows remain on the road on Tuesday night when they travel to Tiffin to take on the Dragons. Tipoff is set for 6:00pm.
