Fairmont, WV--The Ursuline College volleyball team fell to Fairmont State, 3-0, Saturday in nonconference action.
The Arrows (1-13, 0-4 G-MAC) dropped the match by set scores of 11-25, 18-25 and 13-25.
Ursuline jumped out to an early 6-5 lead in the opening set before Fairmont State (12-4, 1-0 MEC) responded with an 11-0 run to take control. The Fighting Falcons later added another 6-1 scoring run to build a 22-8 advantage before closing out the set, 25-11.
The second set proved to be a much tighter battle, with the lead changing hands several times. Fairmont State eventually used a 7-1 run to take a 19-15 advantage. The teams traded points down the stretch, but the deficit was too much for the Arrows to overcome as the Fighting Falcons claimed the set, 25-18.
Fairmont State came out quickly in the third set, building a 10-4 lead before extending its advantage to 19-7. Ursuline responded with a 6-6 stretch, but the Arrows could not close the gap as Fairmont State finished the set, 25-13, to complete the sweep.
Fairmont State held the statistical advantage throughout the match, recording a .387 attack percentage compared to Ursuline's .080. The Fighting Falcons also led in kills, 48-23, while committing 12 attack errors to the Arrows' 16.
Ursuline held the advantage in service aces, 4-2, while Fairmont State led in assists, 47-22, digs, 43-28, and blocks, 7-2. The Fighting Falcons committed two service errors compared to four for the Arrows.
Ellie Zoeckler led Ursuline offensively with nine kills, while Kimora Hansbrough added six.
Sophia Serrano directed the Arrows' offense with 17 assists and contributed eight digs on defense. Mya Jackson added seven digs.
Up next: The Arrows return home Wednesday to host Roberts Wesleyan in nonconference action. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
