Arrows Sweep Malone In Final Home Games

The Ursuline College softball team swept Malone University 6-2 and 9-1 in their final home games of the season on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Both teams were slow to start in game one, the Arrows scoring just one run off Devan Peterson when Alyssa Baratta drove in a double at the bottom of the second. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that Ursuline took off scoring.
 
Junior Sara Fessler hit a triple to right center to gain an RBI and the Arrows second run of the game off Ashley Buttolph. Fessler scored a run of her own directly after on a single from Tara Backherms. Baratta singled to right field to put two runners on bases before Kiley Gallagher hit a home run, earning three RBI's. The Arrows went into sixth inning leading 6-0.
 
The Pioneers added in one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to finalize the score at 6-2 for game one.
 
Nicole Rawlings picked up the win with six innings of work out of the bullpen while allowing six hits and two runs. Kelsey Jakosh went in as relief and pitched one strikeout and two walks before Ashlee Zientek went in to close out for the Arrows. Zientek notched her first save of the season.
 
The Arrows carried the momentum into game two and lead off with four runs in the bottom of the second. Gallagher kicked off the scoring for UC after she doubled to right center before Maddie Fields drove in a hit to send Kiley running home. Herrera earned an RBI on a run from Emily Shrader pinch running for Fields. Ferretti followed up with a run off a single from Savannah Hicks and Hicks was able to get a run of her own when Tara Backherms singled for an RBI. The Arrows led 4-0 going into the third.
 
With only one hit from Malone at the top of the third, Gallagher lead off the Arrows with her second home run of the day. At the top of the fourth, Malone once again had just one hit before the Arrows went back to bat. Hicks and Fessler put themselves on bases before Baratta singled and earned an RBI from Hicks' run. With Gallagher at bat, the Pioneers catcher threw out Baratta at second but was too slow to catch Fessler running home. The Arrows finished up the fourth inning leading 7-0.
 
Malone added in their first run of the game at the top of the sixth before Ursuline followed up with the final two runs to end the game. Fessler singled and stole second before Backherms went up to bat. With a single to left field, Fessler scored a run. Baratta followed up and doubled to advance Backherms to third before Gallagher grounded out, earning an RBI on Backherms final run of the game.
 
The Arrows won game two 9-1. Backherms (4-4) picked up the win with 6 innings of work while allowing one run and six hits while striking out four with zero walks.
 
Ursuline travels down south to compete at Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, April 29th and Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday, April 30th in their final match ups of the season.
