Arrows Sweep Eagles In Home Opener

The Ursuline College softball team had their home opener on Sunday afternoon where they swept the visiting Ashland University Eagles.

The Arrows won game one 10-2 and took the second game 11-0, both in just five innings.

In game one, Ashland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Ursuline broke through offensively in the home half of the second inning. Kiley Gallagher reached first on an error where Madyson Michalski stepped in to pinch run. A sacrifice bunt from Kristin Kopp and single from Devin Peterson put runners at the corners with an out. Kat Ferretti stepped up with a sacrifice fly to send Michalski home for their first run of the game. With Peterson now on second, Hicks singled to left center, advancing Peterson one more base. On an error from the catcher, Peterson scored the Arrow's second and final run of the inning, making the score 2-1.

Alyssa Baratta drove in the Arrows third run of the game in third inning where Fessler scored an unearned run. After the Eagles added in a run of their own in the fourth, Peterson scored a run after doubling to right center and advancing on a wild pitch before Hicks' RBI hit.

After Rawling pitched a no-run fifth inning, the Arrows took the game by storm. With two outs and Backherms on third, Kopp singled to left field for an RBI off Backherms. Peterson singled to right field, advancing Kopp to second before Ferretti singled to center to send Kopp home. The next at bat had Hicks reaching first on an error, loading the bases. AU's pitcher walked both Buttolph and Fessler to follow, putting the Arrows ahead 8-2. With bases loaded once again, Backherms doubled to left center where Buttolph and Hicks scored the final two runs of the game.

The Arrows won the first game 10-2. Rawlings (3-2) picked up the win with 5 innings of work while allowing two runs, one earned on six hits while striking out two and walking three.

In game two, the Arrows jumped out early with seven runs in the second inning to stake claim to a 7-0 lead.

The first of the seven runs came from Josephine Horgan pinch running for Gallagher. Maddie Fields singled to left field, advancing one more off a throwing error by the left field where Horgan ran home. Ferretti stepped up and doubled to left field, sending Fields running home for their second run. Jones singled, Ferretti advanced to third and Michalski stepped in to pinch run for Jones where she immediately stole second on a wild pitch. Hicks walked and with bases fully loaded, Jovanna Herrera tripled, earning three RBI's. With Fessler and Herrera now the only Arrows left on bases, Gallagher singled and sent both Arrows running home for their final runs of the inning.

Backherms allowed just one hit before sending the Arrows to the bottom of the third. Jones drew a one-out walk advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hicks singled and earned an RBI for Jones' run before she advanced to second on Herrera's fly out and ran home on Fessler's double to left field. Fessler followed up with a run of her own on Backherm's single. Baratta batted in the final run of the game on a double.

The Arrows held the Eagles to zero runs and zero hits in the final two innings and ended the game in the fifth inning, 11-0.

Backherms (2-3) picked up the win in game two with five innings of work while no runs on three hits while striking out six and walking one.

Ursuline will travel to Lake Erie College on Tuesday to make up their previously postponed doubleheader with the Storm before returning home on Friday versus Tiffin University.
