Softball Sweeps Cedarville on the Road

The Ursuline College softball team swept Cedarville University in their double-header match up on Friday, 9-2 and 12-11. This was the first time the Arrows have swept the Yellow Jackets in school history.

The Arrows controlled the pace of play from the start of game one, Kristin Kopp scoring the first run at the top of the second off a hit from Kiley Gallagher. At the top of the third, Baratta doubled to right center and advanced to third from Kopp's hit. Devan Peterson doubled to center next, earning an RBI for Baratta's run. Two wild pitches in a row had Peterson advancing to third and scoring their third run of the game before the end of the third inning.

With Nicole Rawlings holding the Yellow Jackets to zero runs, Ursuline continued their hot streak in the fourth. Ferretti opened up the inning doubling to left field and advanced to third on a bunt from Sarah Fessler. Fessler stole second before Baratta stepped up and doubled to left center, earning two RBI's from Ferretti and Fessler's runs. Baratta would get one more unearned run before the end of the fourth off a hit from Kopp, making the score 6-0.

The Jackets answered with their only two runs of the game in the fifth inning, scoring on a throwing error from the Arrows, and making the score 6-2. Peterson earned another RBI on a run from Baratta at the top of the sixth and Shrader got her first RBI of the game at the top of the seventh when Savannah Hicks scored an unearned run. Ferretti added in the final unearned run for the Arrows off of a hit from Baratta, rounding out the score to 9-2 to end game one.

Cedarville came out looking for revenge in game two and scored five runs in the first inning off six errors from the Arrows. After two scoreless innings to follow, Ursuline busted the game wide open in the fourth starting with Tara Backherms homering with Gallagher on base, earning two RBI's. Kopp singled after these runs, putting herself on base to run home to score on  Ferretti's double to left center.

Hicks and Fessler both walked before Shrader singled through the right side, allowing Ferretti to score a run. With bases loaded, Gallagher doubled down the right field line, earning three RBI's on runs by Hicks, Fessler and Shrader. Gallagher scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch, making the score 8-5 before going to field. The Jackets scored just one run this inning before moving on to even matched fifth inning.

Ferretti opened up the fifth doubling to left center followed up Jones and Fessler walking to load the bases. Shrader earned an RBI grounding out while Ferretti ran home. Baratta added in two RBI's to follow when she doubled to center field, allowing for Fessler and Hicks to score. Gallagher earned the final RBI for the Arrows singling to center field with Baratta scoring another run. The Jackets added in four runs of their own in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth to end the game. The Arrows won 12-11 in the bottom of the sixth as the game ended due to the outdoor lighting conditions.

Ursuline will host their next GMAC match up against Malone University on April 1st at 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
