The Ursuline College softball team dropped their season openers versus Eckerd College on Saturday afternoon.
The Tritons won the first game 1-2 after a late start and followed up with a 5-1 win in game two.
In game one, both pitchers held the batters runless in the first four innings of play. At the bottom of the fifth, the Tritons ended the drought scoring off of a sacrifice fly. The Arrows followed up in the seventh when
Jovanna Herrera scored the first run of the season from Maddie Field's double. The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh when the Arrows had pitcher and catcher change. With the bases loaded, the Tritons scored a game winning run on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Eckerd came away with the walk-off victory, 2-1.Â
The Arrows started game two strong with a run from Sarah Fessler on hit to left field from Jovanna Herrara. The Tritons answered in the second inning with a run off of a pitching error, tying the game 1-1. The third and fourth innings were scoreless but the Tritons put an end to it at the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Eckerd's Skylar Redish hit a grand slam. With the score at 5-1, neither team advanced further in the final two innings.
