Game Recap: Basketball |

Ashland Bests Basketball on Saturday

The Ursuline College basketball team falls to conference leader, Ashland University, on Saturday afternoon, 74-57.

The Arrows did their research on the Eagles, who are currently undefeated in the GMAC, and showed up with a strong defensive push the entire game. Half way through the first quarter, the game was tied 7-7 before Ashland went on an eight point unanswered run to to finish out 15-7.

Ursuline continued to push forward and both teams were 12-12 for points in the paint. The Eagles outscored UC by just one point in the second quarter, 20-19. A three pointer in the last three seconds of play held the Eagles to a nine point lead going into the break.

The Arrows came out of the half shooting their best yet in the third quarter. UC shot 7-for-13 (53 percent) from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the arc compared to AU's 10-for-19 (53 percent) and 2-for-6. Defensively, the Arrows had three blocked shots compared to the Eagles zero. Despite the Ursuline's strong quarter, Ashland still lead 60-45 at the end of the third.

Both teams lost some steam in the fourth quarter, the scoring just 14-12. The Arrows were unable to finish with a strong enough push to break through the Eagle's strong lead and ultimately fell 74-57.

The Arrows had three game leaders in the double digits; Michaela Cloonan with 15, Alyssa Evans with 14 and Bekah Green with 11. The Arrows had five blocks and six steals compared to Ashland's four and five. Ashland shot 30-for-62 (48 percent) from inside the paint and 5-for-21 from the arc while Ursuline shot 22-for-57 (39 percent) and 6-for-23.

Ursuline competes back-to-back against Ashland this week as they travel there on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
