Softball Sweeps Panthers on Tuesday Afternoon at Home

The Ursuline College softball team rallied in both games on Tuesday afternoon as they swept the visiting Ohio Dominican University Panthers in Pepper Pike.

The Arrows won game one 4-3 and took the second game 7-6.

In game one, Ohio Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Ursuline broke through offensively in the home half of the fourth inning. Tara Backherms helped her own cause in the circle with a leadoff double and Nicole Rawlings followed with a base hit through the right side to put runners at the corners with no outs. Alyssa Baratta drove in the Arrows first run with a base hit to left field to make it 1-1.

Kat Ferretti then reached on an error to move Baratta to third base and Hicks reached base on the second Panther's error of the inning to score Baratta to give Ursuline a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of runs to make it 3-2 before the Arrows rallied once again in their final at bat. Sara Fessler started the inning with a base hit up the middle that was followed up by a walk to. Backherms. After back-to-back strikeouts, Ashley Buttolph doubled to score two runs and give Ursuline a walk-off win.

Backherms (1-1) picked up the win with 6 1/3 inning of work while allowing three runs, one earned on six hits while striking out four and walking two.

In game two, Ohio Dominican jumped out early with five runs in the first two innings to stake claim to a 5-1 lead. Ursuline scored in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI ground out from Rawlings.

The Arrows offense once again generated some late inning heroics in the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 6-1. Marcella McMahon started the inning with a single through the right side and Jovanna Herrera added a one-out single. Fessler singled to left field to score a pair to make it 6-3 but was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

With two runners on, Kiley Gallagher homered to straight away center field, a three-run shot, that tied the game 6-6.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, McMahon drew a one-out walk and Jaqi Vallejo doubled to right center to put two one with one out. With Vallejo at the plate, a passed ball allowed pinch runner Matyson Michalski to score the go-ahead run to make it 7-6.

Rawlings (2-1) picked up the win in game two with five innings of relief work while allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out one and walking two.

Ursuline will travel to Wheeling University on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Cardinals before returning to conference play on Friday at Ohio Valley.
