Arrows Hold off Mercyhurst in 68-63 in Non-Conference Play Wednesday

The Ursuline College basketball team used a 38-point second half as they defeated Mercyhurst 68-63 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Ursuline used an 8-4 run at the end of the first half to build a 30-27 lead at the break. The momentum continued to start the third quarter as Ursuline started the quarter on an 8-2 run to build a 39-27 advantage.
 
The Arrows lead grew to as many as 14 in the third quarter after a deep two-point jumper from freshman Alyssa Evans to make it 51-37.
 
Layups from sophomore Bekah Green and junior Sam Jenkins late in the frame pushed the lead back to 55-42.
 
FOURTH QUARTER SPARK
 
A pair of early three-pointers in the fourth quarter from senior Ky Crevison helped extend the Ursuline lead early in the period. Crevison added a jumper midway through the quarter to push the lead back to double digits at 63-53 with under 6:00 to play.
 
Freshman Tamara Mathis buried a jumper with under three minutes to play that pushed the lead to 65-57.
 
Leading 66-63 with under a minute to play, Green finished a baseline drive with a layup to put the game away for Ursuline.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
 
Ursuline shot 39 percent (27-of-69) from the field and were 4-of-16 from behind the arc while Mercyhurst was 26-of-64 from the floor and 4-of-20 from the three-point line. The Arrows were 10-of-13 from the free throw line while the Lakers were 7-of-15.  
 
The two teams tied in the rebounding battle 43-43 while Ursuline forced 17 turnovers and outscored Mercyhurst 16-8 in fast break points.
 
Crevison led the Arrow with 19 points including eight in the fourth quarter to help pull the Arrows pull away. Mathis finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while Cardwell added seven points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Green finished with 13 points.
 
UP NEXT
 
Ursuline will start Great Midwest play on December 5 when they host Malone at 6:30 PM.
