The Ursuline College basketball team came up short in a 76-73 road loss to Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday night in a meeting of two teams that were tied in the Great Midwest standings.
Ursuline jumped out to a 3-0 lead when senior
Paige Salisbury hit a three-pointer but Trevecca Nazarene answered back with a three-pointer of its own to tie the game 3-3. The two teams traded the lead several times in the first quarter before junior
Morgan Mattimore buried a three-pointer to make it 20-15 with 1:17 to play. Freshman
Jennah Taylor followed with a layup to make it 22-15.
The Arrows started the second quarter continuing their hot shooting stretch from three when freshman
Emily Poling connected from deep to make it 25-17. Junior
Julia Cardwell converted a layup in transition to make it 32-22 with 5:53 to play in the half. Poling hit another three-pointer to make it 45-34 and once again Taylor followed with a layup to make it 47-36 at the break.
Ursuline held a 55-47 lead after a jumper from freshman
Bekah Green but Trevecca cut the deficit down to 58-56 by the end of the third quarter.
The Trojans outscored Ursuline 40-26 in the second half.
Ursuline shot 28-of-63 (44 percent) from the floor while Trevecca shot 26-of-71 (36 percent) in the game. The Arrows were 11-of-28 from the three-point line while the Trojans were 5-of-22.
The difference in the game came at the free throw line. Trevecca went 19-for-28 from the line while Ursuline was 6-of-8. The Arrows had 22 turnovers while the Trojans only turned the ball over eight times. Trevecca had 16 steals while Ursuline had three steals.
Ursuline was led by Cardwell with 18 points on 7-of-13 from the floor while grabbing five rebounds. Crevison had 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and Poling finished with nine points.
Paige Salisbury had eight points, 12 rebounds and dished out six assists. Taylor finished with eight points off the bench.
The Arrows southern swing continues with a trip to first-place Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The game will tip-off at Noon CST/1:00 PM EST.
