HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
The Ursuline College basketball team shot 54 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the three-point line as they defeated the University of Findlay 67-65 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Arrows jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on back-to-back buckets from sophomore
Morgan Mattimore and seniors
Camryn Hill and
Laney Lewis followed with layups of their own to cap an 8-2 run over the first three minutes.
Â
Findlay struggled from the field in the first quarter and for most of the game made up for their struggles by grabbing 24 offensive rebounds that led to 27 second chance points for the Oilers.
Â
Ursuline got a nice spark from its bench in the early parts of the game as sophomore
Ky Crevison came in and hit a pair of corner three-pointers and fellow sophomore
Julia Cardwell beat the first quarter buzzer with a three-pointer to extend the Arrows lead to 20-13 after one.
Â
The Oilers closed the gap in the second quarter by outscoring Ursuline 21-16 to pull to within two at 36-34 at the break.
Â
Findlay took their first lead of the game with 4:43 to play in the game but Hill quickly put the Arrows back in front with a three-pointer to make it 60-59 in favor of Ursuline. After a Findlay miss, Mattimore hit the Arrows second-straight triple to make it 63-59.
Â
Findlay pulled to within one at 66-65 before a late turnover led to a made free throw from Lewis to seal the win for the Arrows.
Â
JUST MISSED
Â
Lewis, who leads the nation in triple-doubles with three, narrowly missed her fourth of the season after finishing with 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.
Â
It marked the third time this season that she missed a triple-double by one assist. Two other times she has finished with eight assists.
Â
ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR LEWIS
Â
Lewis surpassed the 1,500-point mark in her career at Ursuline with a basket in the fourth quarter. She currently sits fourth all-time in scoring in program history with 1,501 points which leaves her seven points behind former teammate
Erica Huber.
