Arrows Comeback Bid Falls Short at Hillsdale on Tuesday

oThe Ursuline College basketball team used a 19-5 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 76-76 before falling 89-84 on the road at Hillsdale on Tuesday afternoon in Great Midwest conference play.
 
The Arrows came out of the gates quickly in the first quarter after getting a layup from junior Julia Cardwell and she followed it up with a three-pointer to make it 5-0.
 
Ursuline led 7-6 at the media time out but Hillsdale came out on a 12-0 run to build an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
After a tough shooting first quarter, Ursuline was much more efficient in the second quarter. The Arrows shot 8-of-17 from the floor and cut the deficit to 32-25 with 1:14 remaining before the half.
 
Hillsdale took a 38-30 lead into the intermission.
 
Cardwell opened the third quarter with a layup to make it 38-32 and the Arrows cut the deficit to 62-57 late in the third quarter after a pair of free throws from senior Paige Salisbury. Hillsdale answered with a quick layup of their own and forced an Ursuline turnover to the build the lead to 66-57 after three quarters.
 
Trailing 71-57 with 9:00 to go, Ursuline's defense sparked a 19-5 run to take its first lead of the game since the first quarter at 77-76 after a free throw from junior Morgan Mattimore. Freshman Bekah Green picked up a steal and finished a layup with 1:01 to play to make it 85-84.
 
Ursuline shot 31-of-74 (42 percent) from the field and 10-of-23 from behind the three-point line while Hillsdale went 30-of-67 (45 percent) and 11-of-30 from the three-point line. Hillsdale was 18-of-24 from the free throw line while Ursuline was 12-of-18. The Arrows were forced 16 turnovers and had a season-high 10 steals.
 
The Arrows were led by Cardwell who finished with 23 points in 25 minutes on 8-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-5 from the three-point line. Salisbury finished with 18 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Freshman Emily Poling provided a spark off the bench in 31 minutes with 17 points (7-of-9 from the floor) and was 3-of-3 from the three-point line.
 
Ursuline will be off for the mandatory NCAA break for the next seven days before returning home to take on Notre Dame College on December 30 in a non-conference game at 2:00 PM.
